Two-post lifts. The workhorse of nearly every shop from Cedar Rapids to Sioux City. Wheels hang free, so you get full access to brakes, suspension, exhaust and drivetrain. Available in symmetric and asymmetric configurations, with clearfloor (overhead beam) or baseplate designs. Clearfloor needs ceiling height; baseplate is the answer for lower garages.
Four-post lifts. Drive-on, runway-style, and the default choice for storage, detailing, and the classic-car crowd. If you’re stacking a Corvette over a pickup in an Ankeny or Waukee garage through the winter, this is usually the lift. Add rolling jacks when you need wheels-free service.
Scissor and mid-rise lifts. Compact, often portable or flush-mounted, and excellent for tire work, brake jobs, detailing and body shops. Popular in tight urban bays in Iowa City and older downtown buildings in Dubuque where a two-post footprint just won’t fit.
Mobile column lifts. For heavy trucks, buses, fire apparatus, grain trucks and fleet equipment. Wireless sets in four, six or eight columns let a municipal garage in Waterloo or a co-op shop lift what a fixed lift never could — and roll it out of the way afterward.
Alignment lifts. Four-post or scissor alignment platforms with rear slip plates and front turnplates, built for alignment racks and high-volume tire and service work.
Specialty options. Low-rise, portable, in-ground and parking lifts for space-constrained or aesthetic-driven installs.

Choosing the Right Lift for Your Iowa Shop or Garage

We start with four questions, and we ask them in this order: What are you lifting, how often, what does the building measure, and what’s overhead?

Capacity should be sized to the heaviest thing you’ll ever put on it, not the average. A 10,000 lb two-post handles most half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, which matters a lot in a state where the driveway vehicle is frequently a crew cab. Diesel duallies, service trucks, and dump-bed farm trucks push you into 12,000 lb or higher, or into mobile columns entirely.

Then we measure. Ceiling height determines whether you can run a clearfloor two-post or need a baseplate model. Column-to-column width and bay depth determine whether you can open doors on a full-size truck without hitting the posts. On four-post lifts, we look at runway length against wheelbase — long-bed pickups and dually-tow rigs need more platform than a lot of buyers expect. Iowa Install Realities: Concrete, Ceilings, Power and Cold

We advise on core testing, and when the slab doesn’t make the grade, we spec footing pads cut and poured to the manufacturer’s requirement. We won’t anchor a lift into concrete that can’t carry it.
Frost and slab movement. Iowa’s freeze-thaw cycle is aggressive. Unheated garages and pole barns move. We account for that in anchor placement and shimming, and we’ll tell you honestly when a floor-plate design is the smarter long-term choice.
Ceiling height and obstructions. Garage door tracks, openers, sprinkler lines, gas heaters and radiant tube heaters all live in the same airspace your lift wants. We plan around them or recommend relocating them.
Power. Most lifts run 208–240V single phase; commercial shops frequently have three phase. Home garages often need a dedicated circuit added by a licensed electrician. We tell you exactly what the power unit needs so your electrician isn’t guessing.
Cold-weather hydraulics. In an unheated shop near Mason City or Sioux City, cold fluid moves slowly and seals get stiff. We talk fluid selection and cold-start habits so your lift behaves in February the way it did in July.
