Types of Car Lifts We Sell in Indiana

There’s no single “best” lift. There’s a best lift for your ceiling, your floor, your vehicles, and your work. Here’s how the categories actually shake out:

Two-post lifts — The workhorse. Wheels-free, full underbody access, ideal for brakes, exhaust, suspension, and drivetrain. Symmetric versions handle trucks and long-wheelbase vehicles; asymmetric versions rotate the vehicle so doors clear the columns, which matters in a tight two-bay shop. Baseplate models work when you can’t cut into the slab for an overhead crossbar or your ceiling is too low.
Four-post lifts — Drive-on, no lifting points to hunt for, and the go-to for storage. If you’re stacking a Corvette over a daily driver in a Carmel or Zionsville garage, this is your lift. Add rolling jacks and you can still do wheels-free brake work. Four-posts are also easier on a marginal slab because the load spreads across four posts.
Scissor and mid-rise lifts — For low ceilings, mobile detailing operations, tire and wheel work, and shops that need to keep an open floor. Mid-rise units get a car to comfortable working height without eating your headroom. Full-rise scissors give you real service height with a smaller footprint than a two-post.
Mobile column lifts — For heavy-duty: fire apparatus in Fort Wayne, municipal fleets in Indianapolis, school bus barns, Class 6–8 trucks, and RV chassis in Elkhart County. Sets of four or six columns, battery or corded, and you can move them out of the way when you need floor space. Popular with agricultural fleets in the northwest counties, too.
Alignment lifts — Four-post or scissor alignment platforms with rear slip plates and front turnplates. If you’re doing alignments on Indiana roads — and after a Hoosier freeze-thaw cycle, everybody is doing alignments — this pays for itself.

How to Choose the Right Lift

Start with the vehicles, not the lift. If your heaviest regular customer is a three-quarter-ton crew cab pulling a gooseneck, a 9,000-lb capacity two-post is the wrong tool — you want 12,000 lb or more, and you want to check the arm reach against a long wheelbase. If you’re a hobbyist with a couple of muscle cars and a pickup, a 9,000- or 10,000-lb four-post is often the smarter buy for storage plus service.

Then measure. Ceiling height, obstructions, garage door tracks, lights, joist direction, and how far the truck door swings open. We ask for these numbers on every quote for car lifts for sale in Indiana, because the difference between a two-post with an overhead beam and a baseplate model is usually eight inches of clearance — and eight inches is exactly what most residential garages don’t have.

Indiana Install Realities: Concrete, Ceilings, Power, Weather

Concrete. This is where Indiana jobs live or die. Most two-post lifts want a minimum of about 4 inches of 3,000-psi concrete, and more for higher capacities. Older garages in Indianapolis neighborhoods like Irvington and Broad Ripple, farmhouses in Rush and Jay counties, and 1950s slabs in Gary and Hammond frequently come in thin, unreinforced, or poured over fill that has settled. Newer pole barns are often better but sometimes have a thin, floating slab. We can core-test or advise on a footing pour before you buy — cutting a pad and pouring proper footings is cheaper than an anchor pulling out.

Ceiling height. Indiana subdivision garages tend to run 8 to 9 feet. That’s four-post storage or mid-rise territory unless you’re willing to go baseplate. Barns and commercial bays in the 12–16 foot range open up everything, including stacking.

Power. Most single-post and four-post units run on 208–240V single-phase; a lot of shops in Indiana’s older industrial buildings have three-phase available, which is nice for larger power units and mobile columns. Rural service around Bloomfield or Winamac can have voltage-drop issues on long runs — tell us the distance from your panel and we’ll spec accordingly.

Climate. Indiana winters mean road salt riding into your shop on every undercarriage, and that brine attacks lift columns, cables, and hardware faster than most people expect. Humid July days in the Ohio River valley add condensation to the mix. We push galvanized or well-coated components, seasonal cable and hose inspection, and hydraulic fluid appropriate for a building that swings from 15°F to 95°F. An unheated barn near South Bend behaves very differently than a conditioned bay in Evansville.
