The hydraulic cylinder is the single-acting actuator that does the actual lifting on a 2-post lift. On most Rotary, Challenger, and Forward 2-post lifts one cylinder pushes the carriage up from the base of the column while the other side rides on the equalizer cables; on some chain-style designs the cylinder is anchored at the top of the column and pulls the carriage up instead. You need this job when the rod goes wet and you find a puddle under the column, or when the lift will not hold height overnight and the fluid keeps disappearing with no visible hose leak. Learning how to replace a 2-post lift cylinder is well within reach for a mechanically confident shop tech, but it is pressure-critical work and the cables can pull a carriage out of a column if you rush the final step — if any of that gives you pause, this is a good one to hand to a pro.
Tools and prep
Have on hand: a garden hose and squeegee, a bungee cord, a pry bar, a ratchet strap, metal plug and cap fittings to seal the hose and the cylinder port, a drain pan and shop towels, and the correct replacement cylinder. Before you touch a fitting, make the lift safe. Raise it to its top lock, wash out the bottom of the column with the hose, and squeegee the water to the drain so you are not working in a puddle. Then lower the lift onto the locks. The single most important safety step: after the lift is resting on the locks, hold the lowering-valve lever for a full 10 seconds to bleed off residual pressure before you break any hose loose — otherwise it will spray. A key rule that sets the whole job apart: you do not disconnect the lifting cables on a 2-post cylinder swap. That is a 4-post procedure and does not apply here.
Step-by-step: how to replace a 2-post lift cylinder
The first thing to settle when working out how to replace a 2-post lift cylinder is which style you have, because the procedure is genuinely different for the two.
- Style A — cylinder pushes the carriage up from the base of the column. The cylinder sits inside the column and the rod pushes the carriage up.
- Style B — cylinder pulls the carriage up from the top of the column. Common on chain-driven designs; the cylinder is anchored high and pulls the chain.
Style A — pushes from the base
- With the lift on the locks, remove the bolt that holds the cylinder to the carriage — it is typically at the very top of the cylinder.
- Wrap a bungee cord around the lowering-valve lever so the valve stays open, then pull the cylinder rod down by hand until the cylinder is fully collapsed. If it will not come down, work it around in the carriage — something is bound up. A pry bar helps, but do not score the rod.
- If the rod is stuck up in the air and refuses to drop, put towels down, dry the column, remove the bleeder screw on top of the cylinder, and let it drain. It will make a mess; that is normal.
- Detach the hydraulic hose from the cylinder. Install a metal plug into the hose end and a metal cap on the cylinder port so no debris gets into the system.
- Lift the cylinder up into the carriage hole until the bottom is just above the sheave, then angle the base out over the sheave and lower it free. If there is not enough room to angle it out, tighten the plug in the hose, run the lift to max height, angle the cylinder out, then lower onto the locks and hold the release valve for 5 seconds.
- Transfer the fitting to the new cylinder, cap the new port, angle it up through the carriage and over the sheave, and seat it on the peg or in the hole in the base of the column.
- Hold the pump release valve for 5 seconds to bleed residual pressure. Remove the plug and cap, connect the hose, and slowly run the pump to raise the cylinder, guiding the rod through the carriage holes as it rises. If the rod hangs on the carriage, the cables will pull the other carriage out of its column — watch this step closely.
Style B — pulls from the top
- With the column washed and the lift all the way down, detach the hose(s) from the pump and drop them into a waste-oil container. Cap the pump ports — but do not cap the return-line inlet on the pump.
- Remove any hydraulic fitting from the top of the cylinder, unbolt the cylinder from the column, and lower it. Tighten the pump cap and remove the return-line cap.
- Raise the lift to max height, detach the hoses from the cylinder, pull the cylinder out, and lower the lift back onto the locks. Hold the release valve 5 seconds.
- Install the new cylinder, lower the lift all the way, and confirm it routes through the correct holes in the carriage.
- Bungee the lowering-valve lever, then use a ratchet strap to pull the top of the cylinder up to its mounting point and bolt it to the column. Reattach the hydraulic hoses and any return lines.
Bleed, top off, leak-check (both styles)
- Lower the lift completely, raise it about a foot off the ground, and bleed each cylinder by loosening the bleeder screw on top until a solid stream of oil with no air comes out, then close it. Do both cylinders.
- Raise 6 more inches and bleed again. Lower all the way and top off the reservoir.
- Take the lift to max, hold a couple of seconds, look for leaks, wipe the rod and check for weeping residue, then lower all the way.
Fluid and oil
Most 2-post lifts run hydraulic oil equivalent to ISO-32; some older service records call out Dexron ATF. Check what the lift is currently running and do not mix — clear fluid is ISO-32, red is ATF. Defer to the lift’s IOM for the exact reservoir capacity; fill to the max line with the carriages fully lowered.
How to tell it’s time to replace
A cylinder is done when the rod goes wet and stays wet after you wipe it, or when the lift bleeds down overnight with no external hose leak. While you have the lift open, inspect the wear items that fail on the same schedule: lifting and equalizer cables for fraying, broken strands, cording, kinks, or heavy rust; sheaves for cracks, chips, wobble, or a groove worn oversize with the bushing pushed out the side; safety-lock ladders and pawls for bent teeth, sticky pawls, and worn return springs; hydraulic hoses and fittings for cracking, weeping, and rubbing points; and the slide blocks inside the column — bare metal or scoring means the carriage is riding steel on steel. Most shops already opening a 2-post lift for a cylinder job replace the equalizer cables in the same visit, because the labor is the same and the cables usually have similar hours on them.
Safety
