Hoses fail from rubbing against a cable or a piece of the overhead, from age — brittle covers and cracks near the crimp — or from a fitting that has been weeping for years. Tools and prep

Have ready: the correct replacement hose and fittings (verified against the OD and the pump and cylinder ends), metal plugs for the open hose ends, a drain pan, side cutters, wrenches, replacement copper bleeder washers, a bleeder wrench (often 16mm hex or an Allen key), zip ties and hose clamps, and protective sleeve for sharp edges. Make the lift safe first: lower it all the way down and hold the lowering valve for 10 seconds to release all pressure. Remove any hose clamps and zip ties, and make sure no customer vehicle is within 5 feet — if the hose has trapped fluid, you will spill some.

Step-by-step: how to replace a car lift hydraulic hose

  1. Confirm the OD of the existing hose and that you have the correct replacement hose and fittings on hand, and that the fittings match the pump and the cylinder end.
  2. With the lift down and pressure bled, detach the pump-side end of the hose first. If the lift has a T union in the middle of the overhead beam, detach the lower end going into the T first so it drains into a pan instead of down the top of the lift.
  3. Place the detached end into the reservoir or a drain pan. Plug the pump-side end of the hose with a metal plug.
  4. Detach the far end of the hose and drain it into the pan. Plug that end too, then pull the old hose out.
  5. Measure the old hose and make the new hose to the same length. Crimp the fittings per the hose-making procedure for your crimper and die set.
  6. Route the new hose so it does not rub cables or moving parts, and do not pinch it between the column base plate and the carriage.
  7. Attach the pump-side end first, then the far end (or the T union side, depending on the lift). Watch the routing at sharp corners and do not overtighten the clamps.
  8. Reinstall the hose clamps and zip ties.
  9. Run the lift until the cylinders begin to raise, then bleed each cylinder: loosen the bleeder screw on top, let air out until a solid stream of oil comes, and close the bleeder. Replace the copper washer if it will not seal.
  10. Clean up spilled fluid, lower the lift all the way, and top off the reservoir. Raise to max height for a second or two, look for leaks, and check for pinching or rubbing. Lower.

Fluid and oil

Clear fluid is ISO-32, red is Dexron ATF — match what the lift is running and do not mix. Bleeder washers are usually copper and get replaced when they compress out. Defer to the lift’s IOM for reservoir capacity; top off to the full line with the lift all the way down.
