The hydraulic power unit — the pump — is the box that sits on the driver-side column of a 2-post lift, on the pump stand of a scissor or mid-rise, or on a bracket next to an inground lift. It combines a hydraulic pump, an electric motor, a reservoir, a lowering (dump) valve, and a check valve into one hangable assembly. The single most important spec is voltage: 220V versus 120V. The tag on the side tells you which you have, and ordering the wrong voltage buys you a paperweight. Tools and prep

Have ready: a voltage meter, wrenches for the fittings, clean oil for the o-rings, the correct fluid to fill the reservoir, a drain pan, and the correct-voltage replacement power unit. Make the lift safe first. Read the tag on the existing power unit and confirm 220V or 120V, then confirm the replacement matches. Find the breaker box, locate the breaker that powers the pump, and shut it off — usually a 220V breaker for a shop lift. Have someone press the up button while you flip breakers so you know you have the right one. Then test that there is no power at the pump: press the up button, and use the voltage meter on the pump leads if it does not run. Finally, press the release valve for at least 5 seconds — if there is still pressure when you crack a hose without bleeding it, hydraulic fluid sprays.

  1. With power confirmed off and pressure bled, disconnect the wiring going to the pump.
  2. Disconnect the hydraulic hoses. Disconnect the safety shut-off switch cable if the lift has one for the overhead safety bar.
  3. Unhang the old power unit from the column. Do not lay it on its side — the reservoir is not sealed for that and it will make a mess.
  4. Hang the new power unit on the column. Reuse the old fittings if they are undamaged, or install new ones; put a drop of clean oil on every o-ring.
  5. Reconnect the hydraulic hoses. Reconnect the safety shut-off switch cable if applicable.
  6. Fill the new reservoir with the correct fluid — usually ISO-32 hydraulic oil or Dexron ATF, matching what the lift is currently running.
  7. Hook up temporary power to test. Turn the breaker back on. Run the lift up and back down. Top off the oil at the bottom.
  8. Turn the breaker off, disconnect temporary power, and connect the permanent wiring. Cycle the lift one more time under permanent power.

Fluid and oil

Match the fluid to what is already in the lift — clear is ISO-32, red is ATF — and do not mix. Add oil at the reservoir until the fluid reaches the max line with the carriages fully lowered. Defer to the lift’s IOM for the exact reservoir capacity rather than guessing.

A power unit is the answer when the motor is weak or will not run, when the lift drifts down on its own (a lowering-valve or check-valve issue inside the unit), or when the housing shows melted lugs and black spots on the switch.
