  4. Pull or drive the pin out the top of the carriage. Drive out any roll pin in the pawl gear.
  5. Clean up the pin with sandpaper so the new pawl gear slides on.
  6. Reinstall the pin and place the new pawl gear on it. Install a new roll pin — if the new roll-pin holes will not line up, use one or two cotter keys cut to length so it looks clean.
  7. Reinstall clips and retaining pins to keep the pawl-gear pin in. Reinstall every part that came off — especially the return spring.
  8. Anti-seize the restraint gear mounting bolts. Bolt the new restraint gear on. Confirm the restraint gear and lock pawl are fully engaged or can fully engage as you bolt it on.
  9. Lower the lift all the way and confirm the arms still swing freely.
  10. Raise the lift, swing an arm inward under light hand pressure, and confirm the restraint gear catches and holds.

Lifts with a restraint lock mechanism (Challenger 15,000 lb style)

  1. Remove the cotter keys, clips, or pins that hold the lock mechanism on. Some designs use a single bolt and pin with internal springs — note the orientation before disassembly.
  2. Compare new to old to confirm the correct part.
  3. Install the new lock mechanism using the original pins if no new hardware came with the part.
  4. Lower and cycle the lift; verify arm swing at the ground and restraint engagement in the air.
