These flat, low-friction plates let the rear tires move sideways as the suspension settles into its natural stance. Why the Rear Wheels Need to Move

An alignment is only as good as the position the vehicle rests in while it is measured. Drive a car onto the rack and the tires are still loaded with steering and suspension bind from the approach. On the front, the turntables release that bind by pivoting. On the rear, there is no steering, but the suspension geometry still needs to relax laterally as the car settles onto the runways. Rear slip plates give the tire a slick surface to slide on, so the rear axle drops into its true resting width and the aligner reads honest rear toe and thrust angle.

Like turntables, slip plates are held stationary with lock pins during drive-on. Once the vehicle is centered on the rack, the technician pulls the pins and the plates float free. Skipping that release step is one of the most common causes of an alignment that reads fine on the rack but pulls on the road.

How Slip Plates Are Built

A slip plate is essentially two flat steel surfaces that glide against each other on a low-friction interface, often with roller bearings or a machined slide. The top plate carries the tire and moves; the bottom plate is fixed to the rack or the floor. Because the rear wheels do not need to rotate the way the fronts do on a caster sweep, slip plates are usually rectangular and simpler than turntables, but the low-friction quality of the slide is just as important. A plate that binds defeats its own purpose. Good alignment slip plates use a sealed, well-supported slide so the top plate glides smoothly under the full weight of the tire and returns to a neutral position when the vehicle drives off. The travel of the slide should be generous enough to let even a wide-track vehicle settle without hitting the end of its movement, and the surface should shed grit rather than trapping it, because trapped debris is the fastest way to turn a smooth plate into a sticky one.

Sizing and Capacity

Slip plate capacity should exceed the rear-axle weight of the heaviest vehicle you service, with the same general margin you apply to the front turntables. Plate length and width vary by rack and by the wheelbase range you expect. On a rack designed for cars and light trucks, the rear slip plates are positioned to cover a broad span of wheelbases; longer runways and adjustable rear plate positions handle the widest range. Keep the numbers general and match them to your actual vehicle mix rather than chasing a single spec.

Placement: Recessed vs Surface

How the plates sit relative to the runway surface matters for both accuracy and daily use. On a drive-on alignment rack, the slip plates are integral to the rear of the runways and sit flush with the driving surface, so the tire rolls on and stops squarely on the plate. In a flush-floor or in-ground alignment pit, the plates can be recessed into the concrete so the whole bay is at floor level. Surface-mounted arrangements are simpler to install and service, while recessed installs give a clean, flat bay but require the concrete work to be planned up front. Your choice usually follows the rack platform you select rather than being a standalone decision.

Slip plates wear more slowly than turntables because they do not spin, but the slide surface can still gum up, collect grit, or lose its low-friction glide over years of service.
