Semi-downdraft is a legitimate second choice when you cannot cut a pit or elevate the vehicle, but expect a slight quality drop on horizontal surfaces. Crossdraft still ships and still works. It’s the choice for a low-volume restoration bay where a clean cross-flow is enough for the work.
Lighting for color, not just for illumination
Modern automotive paints use metallic and pearl pigments that shift under different light temperatures. Any automotive paint booth for sale worth quoting should ship with 5000K LED lighting at a Color Rendering Index of 90 or better, with fixtures recessed behind tempered gasketed glass. Cheap booths still show up with 4000K fluorescent tubes in bare housings. Pit-mount gives a flat working surface and a slightly cleaner airflow, but requires cutting your slab. Raised-platform is faster to install and reversible if you ever move, but you lose 12 to 18 inches of vertical clearance. Automotive booths fall under NFPA 33, NEC 516, and local building and fire codes.
