1. Home garage storage

A home-storage 4 post lift is typically 7,000 to 9,000 pound capacity, uses a cable-driven design (safer and simpler for the driveway lifter), has locking positions every 3 to 4 inches, and often includes drive-off ramps that can double as wheel chocks. The key numbers to size on: your ceiling height (you need enough height to raise the lift high enough to park a car underneath), your vehicle weight (add roughly 20 percent buffer for peace of mind), your vehicle wheelbase (some lifts have runway lengths that are marginal for pickups and long SUVs), and your garage floor thickness.

2. Commercial shop service
If you run a service shop or a fleet operation and need a 4 post lift for actual repair work – long chassis vans, cargo trucks, service vehicles too long for a 2-post – you want a commercial-grade lift. Commercial 4 post lifts run 12,000 to 40,000 pound capacity, have longer runways (18 to 26 feet common), and often come with a rolling jack accessory that lets the wheels come off the runway so tire, brake, and suspension work can happen. Rolling jacks are what make a 4 post lift useful for actual mechanical service rather than just storage.

3. Alignment work
An alignment-rack version of a 4 post lift is what most shops actually mean when they say alignment rack. It is a standard 4 post lift with the following add-ons: turnplates at the front (so the wheels can steer while measuring toe and caster), rear slip plates (so the rear can slide while the front adjusts), a level-tolerant runway that stays truly flat under load, and often a pit or floor space cut out under the runways for the alignment machine’s cameras or heads. 4 post lift versus 2 post lift – which do you actually need?
A quick way to think about it: 2-post lifts are for wrenching. You lift by the frame, the wheels drop free, you can work on brakes, suspension, wheels, and the whole underside. 4 post lifts are for driving on. You keep the wheels on the runways, and you can do fluid changes, exhaust work, and pull-through inspections easily – but full wheel-off work requires the rolling jack accessory. Home garage storage is almost always a 4 post lift (you cannot store a car overnight on hydraulic 2-post arms – safety concern and the arms drift over time). Alignment work is almost always a 4 post lift (turnplates and slip plates are the whole point). General service can go either way, and most busy shops end up with a mix.
Ceiling height, floor, and install considerations
Before ordering any 4 post lift, measure three things carefully. First: your ceiling height, including any garage door tracks, ductwork, lights, and beams that would interfere at full-lift. A home-storage 4 post lift typically wants at least a 9 to 10 foot ceiling to be useful; more is better. Second: your floor slab. Home garage slabs are usually 4 inches of concrete, which is the minimum most 4 post lifts specify. Commercial shop slabs are usually 6 inches. Some heavy-duty lifts require 8 inches or a poured pad below the columns. If your floor is a question mark, we can inspect before ordering. Third: garage door position. If the door opens across where you want the lift, you need to plan clearance so the door does not hit a stored vehicle.
On the install side, home garage 4 post lifts are usually cable-driven and can be assembled by a competent DIY installer following the manual. That said, we install professionally in central Iowa and can install remotely by drop-shipping the lift and coordinating a local installer for out-of-region buyers. Commercial 4 post lifts (12K+) we strongly recommend having installed professionally – the columns need to be anchored, plumbed, and torqued to spec, and the safety lock system needs to be tested under load before the lift goes into service.
ALI certification and safety
Look for the ALI Gold Label on any 4 post lift you buy for shop use. ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) is the third-party safety certifier for vehicle lifts. Home-garage lifts often are not ALI certified because the ALI test focuses on shop service – but that does not automatically mean home lifts are unsafe, it means they were not enrolled in the certification program. If safety is a concern (and it should be), stick with lifts from established manufacturers and follow the maintenance schedule in the manual.
