2 post lift capacity – the single most important spec

The most common mistake we see on 2 post lift purchases is buying too small. A 9,000 pound 2 post lift handles a passenger car all day long, but the moment a half-ton pickup rolls in with a curb weight of 6,500 pounds plus tools plus fuel plus a passenger, you are at the top of the lift’s rating on every job. Our practical minimum recommendation for any general-service shop is 10,000 pounds. For a shop that regularly sees three-quarter or one-ton pickups, go 12,000 pounds. For heavy-duty trucks (F-450 up, cargo vans, service trucks), go 15,000 pounds or higher. Buying more capacity than you need is fine and future-proofs the shop; buying less will bite you.

Symmetric vs asymmetric 2 post lift geometry

Symmetric 2 post lift columns face directly across from each other and the vehicle sits centered between them. Best for cars whose center of gravity is close to the middle of the wheelbase. Asymmetric geometry rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees so the vehicle sits offset to one side – the front wheels sit further forward, the driver door swings clear of the column more easily, and the vehicle center of gravity balances between the arms.

Rule of thumb: symmetric is fine for shops that mostly lift passenger cars and light SUVs. Asymmetric is better for shops that lift a lot of trucks and larger vehicles, and better for any bay where the door-clearance issue matters. If you are unsure, go asymmetric – the versatility usually pays back.

Ceiling and slab requirements

Standard-height 2 post lift columns clear about 10 feet at full lift with a typical vehicle up. Extended-height columns clear 12+ feet and are used in shops that lift dually pickups, cargo vans, or tall vehicles where you also need to walk around under them without ducking. Measure to your lowest ceiling obstruction (garage door track, ductwork, lighting) before you commit to standard height.

Slab: any 2 post lift wants at least 4 inches of concrete at 3000 PSI or better for home installs, 6 inches for commercial. Heavy-duty (15K+) wants 6 to 8 inches.
