The four electric scissor lift categories

Low-rise electric scissor lift (18-30 inches)

The shortest of the scissor family. Raises a vehicle 18 to 30 inches – enough clearance for a tire tech to work standing up on wheel-off jobs, brake work, exhaust work, or oil changes. Low-rise electric scissor lift models are ideal for tire shops and quick-service operations where the technician is not going to walk under the raised vehicle. Mid-rise electric scissor lift (30-48 inches)

The tire-and-alignment shop workhorse height. Vehicle sits about knee-to-waist high – enough for the technician to work sitting on a stool at wheels and brake components. Full-rise electric scissor lift (60-72 inches)

Comparable to 2-post or 4-post lift height – vehicle is 5 to 6 feet in the air and the technician walks under it standing up. Full-rise electric scissor lift models are used in shops where floor footprint matters and there is no 2-post option (low ceiling, no place for corner columns). Compact runway design.

Alignment scissor lift

Electric scissor lift capacity ranges

Automotive electric scissor lift capacities typically run 7,000 to 18,000 pounds. Passenger cars and light SUVs fit on any 7K to 10K scissor. Half-ton pickups fit on 10K to 12K. Three-quarter and one-ton trucks need 14K to 18K. Do not confuse automotive scissor lifts with the construction / aerial scissor lifts you see on job sites – those are person-lifts rated in worker weight, not vehicle weight, and they are a completely different product category.

Electric scissor lift versus 2-post lift

Both lift a vehicle high enough for underbody work. Trade-offs:

  • Footprint: scissor wins – no corner columns eating into the bay.
  • Wheel-off work: 2-post wins if the scissor lifts by the platform (which most do). Some scissor lifts have runway cutouts for rolling jacks to enable wheel-off.
  • Speed: scissor usually wins on up-cycle time in high-volume shops.
  • Serviceability: 2-post wins. Scissor mechanisms are more complex and more expensive to service when they fail.
  • Cost: 2-post is often cheaper for equivalent capacity and height.

Rule of thumb: if you have the floor space and ceiling for a 2-post, buy the 2-post. If you do not (low ceiling, bay geometry issues, or you specifically need the compact scissor footprint), then the electric scissor lift is the right answer.

Install requirements for an electric scissor lift

Scissor lifts are typically bolt-down or set-on-slab installations. Floor requirement: 4 inches of concrete at 3000 PSI for home / light commercial, 6 inches for heavier duty. Ceiling: depends on the scissor category – low-rise needs very little (8-foot ceiling is fine), mid-rise wants 9-10 feet, full-rise needs 12+ feet for a vehicle raised up. Power: single-phase 220V for smaller lifts, three-phase 220V/460V for heavier ones. Some flush-mount scissor variants require a shallow pit cut into the slab, adding install complexity – most surface-mount scissors do not.

Common questions on an electric scissor lift purchase

Do I need three-phase power? Depends on capacity. Under 10K almost always runs single-phase 220V. 10K-14K often has both options. Over 14K typically requires three-phase.

Can an electric scissor lift do alignment work? Only if it is specifically an alignment-configured scissor with turnplates, slip plates, and calibrated runway flatness. A standard scissor is not accurate enough for alignment.

Flush-mount versus surface-mount? Surface-mount is cheaper and easier to install – the lift bolts to the top of the slab. Flush-mount sits in a shallow pit so the runway is level with the floor – looks cleaner, adds thousands to the install because of the pit work.

Can I add a rolling jack to an electric scissor lift? Only on certain models. Some full-rise scissors accept a bolt-on rolling jack accessory; low-rise and most mid-rise scissors do not. If wheel-off work matters and you want a scissor rather than a 4-post, verify jack compatibility before committing to the model.
