What an Asymmetrical Car Lift Actually Is
A 2-post asymmetrical car lift has three defining traits. First, the columns are rotated toward the drive-through aisle by roughly 30 degrees, so the vehicle sits set back on the arms rather than centered between the columns. Second, the front arms are shorter than the rear arms — typically about a 30/70 split of the vehicle’s wheelbase — which places the center of gravity behind the columns. Third, the front arm reach is designed so that the driver’s door and the front passenger door clear the column when the vehicle is spotted correctly. That last piece is the whole reason the format exists, and it is why asymmetric 2-posts outsell true symmetric 2-posts in general-service shops.
Asymmetric Versus Symmetric Versus Versymmetric
Three formats show up in the catalog and each has a real use case. A symmetric 2-post has equal-length front and rear arms and centers the vehicle between the columns — correct for trucks, vans, and heavy vehicles where load balance matters more than door swing. An asymmetrical car lift trades a small amount of load balance for a huge gain in door clearance and is correct for a shop that mostly works on passenger cars and small SUVs. A versymmetric lift is a hybrid: the arms are asymmetric-length but the columns are set for either geometry depending on how the tech spots the vehicle. If your shop is a mix, versymmetric is the safer buy. If your shop is 80 percent cars, an asymmetric wins.
Getting the Spotting Right
The most common mistake we correct on the phone is a shop that bought an asymmetric lift and is treating it like a symmetric one. If the vehicle is driven all the way forward until it is centered between the columns, the front arms cannot reach the manufacturer’s pinch-weld pad, the load is off-balance, and the doors still hit the columns. An asymmetrical car lift is designed to be spotted with the driver’s door line at (or slightly behind) the column line — typically 30 percent of the wheelbase forward of the columns and 70 percent behind. When that spot is right, the arms swing to the correct pads, the vehicle is stable in the air, and the doors open. When it is wrong, the whole design advantage disappears.
Column Height, Ceiling, and Iowa Bay Geometry
Most modern asymmetric 2-posts we install in central Iowa need 12 to 14 feet of ceiling to raise a passenger car fully with the overhead bar clear, and about 12 feet of column-to-column drive-through clearance. If your bay is closer to 11 feet at the header, we quote a base-plate version of the same model — the crossmember runs at the floor instead of overhead.
