Electric car lifts — the ones that run purely on 110V or 220V single-phase household power without needing shop air — have become the default for home garages and small independent shops across Iowa. Our Auto Lift Services team installs and services these units from Des Moines to Sioux City, and we get the same question every week: I don’t have an air compressor and don’t plan on one — which lift can I run? The short answer is that most modern 2-post and 4-post lifts already run electric-hydraulic, and shop air is rarely a hard requirement anymore.

What electric actually means on a lift

Here’s the important distinction: nearly every modern car lift is electric-hydraulic. The powerpack is an electric motor spinning a hydraulic pump. What varies is whether the arm restraints or lock releases require shop air. Electric car lifts break down into three real subtypes. First, fully electric operation — motor, pump, lock release, and arm restraint are all electric or manual, and no shop air is needed anywhere. Second, electric-hydraulic with air-assist locks — motor and pump are electric, but the lock release solenoid runs on shop air. Third, battery-driven mobile columns — battery-powered heavy-truck lifts, a different category we cover in separate articles. When a customer asks for electric car lifts without air, they almost always mean type one: fully electric with a manual lock lever.

Why fully electric matters for home garages

The customer we see most often for fully electric car lifts is the home-garage owner who doesn’t want to invest in a shop-grade air compressor. Air compressors capable of running lock releases reliably start around 30 gallons at 5 CFM, drop tanks aren’t cheap, and running the plumbing in a residential garage is often more work than the lift install itself. We had a customer in central Iowa who was clear: he wasn’t planning to have an air compressor in the garage, wasn’t planning to work on cars, just wanted to lift and store. For that profile we spec models with manual lock releases and no air requirement. The lock is a physical lever you pull to lower the lift — mechanical, no plumbing, no maintenance beyond a drop of oil once a year.

Which electric car lifts we recommend

Here’s what we install most often when customers ask specifically for electric car lifts in Iowa homes and shops. The BendPak HD-9 is a 9,000 lb 4-post with a 110V single-phase powerpack and manual lock release — the default home garage electric lift. The Atlas Garage Pro 8 is an 8,000 lb 4-post with fully electric operation and manual locks. The Rotary AR-9 is a 9,000 lb 4-post with an electric powerpack and manual lock system. The Rotary SPOA10 is a 10,000 lb 2-post on 220V single-phase electric-hydraulic — air-assist available but not required. The Challenger CL10 is a similar 10,000 lb 2-post, electric-hydraulic with air optional. Every one of these will fully raise and lower a vehicle with nothing but an electrical outlet. The 4-posts run standard 110V for home use. The 2-posts want 220V for rise-speed reasons.

Power draw and circuit sizing

Electric car lifts pull real amps on startup, and planning the electrical is part of every install. A 110V 2 HP powerpack draws a 15 to 20 amp startup surge and needs a dedicated 20-amp circuit. A 220V 2 HP powerpack draws about 15 amps continuous at 220V and a 30-amp double-pole breaker is recommended. A 220V 3 HP commercial powerpack runs 20 amps continuous and a 40-amp double-pole. If your garage has a standard 15-amp lighting circuit and nothing else, a 110V lift can trip the breaker on startup. We tell Iowa customers to have an electrician add a dedicated 20- or 30-amp circuit for the lift before we show up to install. It’s typically a modest cost through a residential electrician in the Des Moines, Ames, or Cedar Rapids area.

The compressor-free garage in practice

We had a customer in central Iowa who was clear from the first call — no air compressor in his garage, no plans to work on cars, just lift and store. We spec’d a BendPak HD-9 on 110V, no compressor needed. Install took a morning. He plugs it in, drives up, pulls the manual lock lever to raise, releases the same lever to lower. Another customer in the Ames area wanted a 2-post for suspension work in a detached garage without air lines. We spec’d a Rotary SPOA10 with 220V direct-drive electric-hydraulic operation and manual arm restraints. No air ever needed. Both installs run years later without a compressor on either property. This is the normal home-garage build now, not the exception.

What air still buys you

If you’re evaluating electric car lifts against air-equipped models, here’s what shop air actually adds. Faster lock release — a solenoid pop versus a manual lever pull. Automatic arm restraint engagement — air locks the arms in position when a load is on. Impact wrenches and other pneumatic tools, though that’s separate from the lift itself. For a home garage doing occasional work, none of that is worth the cost of a shop compressor system. For a commercial shop running 20 vehicles a day, air pays back fast because the seconds saved per lifting cycle compound into real labor hours. Match the equipment to the workload honestly.

Speed differences by voltage

Electric car lifts at 110V single-phase are slower on rise than 220V or 3-phase. Rough numbers: 110V 2-post lifts hit 60 to 75 seconds full rise; 220V 2-post lifts hit 45 to 55 seconds; 220V 4-post storage lifts hit 45 to 60 seconds; 3-phase commercial hits 30 to 40 seconds. If you’re a home enthusiast lifting once a weekend, the difference between 60 and 45 seconds doesn’t matter. If you’re a shop tech lifting 20 times a day, it compounds fast. Spec accordingly, and don’t pay for 220V rise speed you’ll never use in a residential context.

Service life on electric powerpacks

Our service records show that electric car lifts with quality powerpacks — Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak factory units — routinely run 15 to 20 years without a powerpack rebuild. Cables and cylinders wear before the motor does. Where we see early powerpack failure is on the cheapest import brands where the motor bearings and pump seals aren’t up to daily-use standards. If you’re buying for occasional home use, the entry-level pumps hold up fine. For daily commercial use, spec factory brand-name and skip the imports.
