What makes a good oil change car lift
An oil change car lift is defined by what you are doing under the vehicle, and oil changes are one of the least demanding jobs in the shop. You need to get the drain plug and the filter accessible, run a hose or a bucket, and get out. You are not pulling a transmission. You are not swinging a door open at eye level. That means three things: fast up, tall enough for a bucket and your arms to work, and a low collapsed height so it fits under the pan when the car rolls on. A mid-rise scissor lift or a low-profile four-post checks every one of those boxes. A heavy two-post with big arms is overkill for a job that takes twenty minutes.
Mid-rise scissor: the DIY favorite
For a homeowner or a small shop that mainly changes oil, rotates tires, and does light brake work, a mid-rise scissor is the sweet spot. Models like the Rotary RLP77 and the Challenger DX77 lift to about 48 inches, more than enough clearance for oil and filter work, and they collapse down under 4 inches so any car in the driveway drives right onto the platforms. They are portable, they wire to a 220V outlet, and the good ones have air-release safety locks so lowering is a single lever pull. Four-post lifts for the maintenance-first buyer
If oil changes are the plan today but you might store a second vehicle overhead tomorrow, a four-post is worth the extra footprint. A homeowner in western Iowa we quoted last spring wanted an 8,000-lb four-post with rolling jacks so he could park his half-ton truck overhead in winter and still pull the wheels for brake work when he needed to. Two-post lifts: fine, but usually not needed
Some buyers still want a two-post because that is what they saw at the dealership. A two-post is a great lift, but for a strict oil change car lift use case it is more machine than you need. You have to spot the vehicle exactly right on the arms, the arms have to swing under the pinch welds, and the ceiling has to clear the top of the columns. That is a lot of setup for a job you were going to do in twenty minutes. Ceiling, floor, and power in an Iowa garage
Most Iowa home garages we work in have 9 to 12 feet of ceiling and 4 inches of concrete. A mid-rise scissor works in every one of those garages because the top of the lift never goes higher than the roof of the car. A four-post needs closer to 11 feet 6 inches of ceiling to store a sedan overhead. Power matters too: some mid-rise scissors run on standard 110V circuits, most four-posts and two-posts want 220V, and a 30-amp dryer outlet is often the easiest existing circuit to tap. Accessories worth adding for oil work
A rolling drain pan on casters is the single most useful accessory for a dedicated oil change car lift. Add a set of extension pads for anything with a low pinch weld, and add drip trays if you are using a four-post so an oil leak on an older vehicle does not stain the concrete underneath. LED underhood lights are cheap and change the whole experience. If the lift lives outside a heated space, a jug of hydraulic fluid rated for cold temperatures is worth having on the shelf because Iowa winters will thicken the wrong oil enough to slow the lift down noticeably.
