The three measurements that decide everything
Before we can quote any residential car lift for garage use, we need three numbers from you: interior ceiling height, garage door height, and slab thickness or age. Ceiling under 10 feet puts you in low-ceiling 2-post territory — the Rotary SPOA10 LC and the Challenger CLFP9 are our two go-tos. Both fit under 10 feet and still lift a full-size sedan or midsize SUV to shoulder height for wheel-off work. Ceiling 10 to 11 feet gives you standard 2-post or low-rise 4-post range. Ceiling 12 feet and up means full flexibility — full-height 4-post, full-rise 2-post, or a mid-rise scissor for storage. Slab thickness matters just as much as height. Residential builder slabs are usually 3.5 inches, sometimes 4. Most 10,000 lb 2-posts require 4 inches of 3,000 psi.
Storage versus service — pick one primary use
The single biggest question we ask on any residential car lift for garage quote is this: are you buying to store a second car, or to work under vehicles? The answer changes the recommendation entirely. If your primary use is storage — parking a project car on top of a daily driver — you want a 4-post. The runways are drive-on and drive-off, the lift sits parked with a car on it indefinitely, and you don’t need to fuss with arm swings. The pole-building customer profile
One of the most common residential car lift for garage profiles we see across rural Iowa is the pole-building owner — a 30×40 or 40×60 building on a fresh concrete pad, 12-foot side walls, doing hobby restoration or storing a small collection. We had one customer describing exactly this scenario: a 30×40 pole building, 12-foot side walls, planning to lift a passenger vehicle around 7,000 lb and store one car on the lift with another beneath. These builds are ideal. Ceiling is generous, concrete is fresh, and the door heights usually clear anything you’d drive in. For this customer profile we default to a Rotary AR-14 or a Challenger 4-post for storage plus service crossover.
The suburban 2-car garage profile
The other most common install is a 24×24 attached 2-car garage in Ankeny, Urbandale, or Waukee. Ceiling is typically 9 feet unless the builder went vaulted. Slab is 3.5 inches. Door is 7 or 8 feet. For this customer, a residential car lift for garage that actually works looks like a Rotary SPOA10 LC low-ceiling 2-post or a BendPak HD-9SR 4-post with lower rise. Anything taller and the garage door won’t clear the raised vehicle. This is where over-buying hurts — we’ve seen customers order a full-height 2-post based on internet advice and discover they can’t close their garage door with a truck in the air.
Power — what your garage can actually run
Most residential garages have one 110V circuit and maybe a 220V dryer outlet. A residential car lift for garage comes in three power options: 110V single-phase for slower rise but plug-and-play in any garage — most home 4-posts default here; 220V single-phase for faster rise, common on 2-posts and usually requiring an electrician to run a dedicated circuit; and 3-phase, which is commercial only and never runs residential. If you don’t have 220 and don’t want to add it, that’s fine — we just spec the lift accordingly. Adding a 220V dedicated circuit in an attached Iowa garage is typically a straightforward electrician job.
Concrete details we won’t skip
For any residential car lift for garage install, we anchor to the slab with Hilti KB-TZ or equivalent wedge anchors. Anchor length matches slab depth minus 0.5 inch for safety. If your slab is 4 inches, anchor is 3.5 inches. If your slab is 5 inches or thicker — some pole buildings run 6 — we upgrade to longer anchors for pullout strength. We’ve had customers try to install their own lift on 3-inch slab in a 40-year-old detached garage. It works, until it doesn’t. The failure mode is the base plate rocking under load, which loosens anchors, which eventually pulls the column out of plumb. That’s how a lift falls. It’s why every install we do starts with slab confirmation before the crew arrives.
