What a failing car lift cylinder actually looks like
Field failure of a car lift cylinder shows up in one of three ways: visible fluid, drift with weight on the lift, or refusal to lift at all. Visible fluid usually comes down the outside of the rod and pools at the base of the column or drips onto the vehicle below — the second one is what makes the phone ring loudest, because a shop customer noticing oil on their hood cover becomes a very expensive conversation. Drift means the lift settles under load, sometimes by an inch overnight, sometimes by a foot in an hour. Refusal to lift often follows drift by weeks or months.
Age plays into all three modes. A ten-year-old cylinder on a two-post that was greased regularly and kept in a heated shop is a different beast from a twenty-year-old cylinder on a farm lift that sat outside through six Iowa winters. When we take the call, one of the first questions we ask is how the lift is stored and how it has been maintained, because that shapes whether we bring seal kits, a replacement assembly, or both in the truck when we roll out.
Fluid on the floor: reading the leak point
Where the fluid ends up tells us what the failure is. Fluid running down the outside of the rod means a rod seal or a rod wiper is bypassing. Fluid pooling at the very base of the column, with nothing on the rod itself, usually means a port fitting is loose or a barrel weld is weeping. Fluid at the top of the reservoir inside the mechanical cabinet usually means overfilling from a previous top-off, not a cylinder leak at all — that is one of the more common false alarms we see on the road.
Reading the pattern before pulling anything apart saves labor. Rod-seal leaks respond to a seal kit; barrel-weld leaks do not, because you cannot rebuild a compromised weld under pressure and expect it to hold. On some brands the rod is exposed and easy to inspect visually; on others you have to pull covers to see the true failure point. That is where a service call from a technician who has already seen the specific lift model pays for itself the first time.
The four most common car lift cylinder failure modes
We see the same four failure modes over and over. First is rod-seal wear, usually from age plus contaminated fluid; this is the cheap fix and accounts for maybe half of the cylinder calls we take across a normal month. Second is piston-seal wear, which shows up as drift rather than external leak; this is also seal-kit territory. Third is bore corrosion, which we find inside older cylinders that took on water at some point in their life. Fourth is rod pitting, from moisture sitting on exposed chrome — very common on lifts kept in unheated buildings.
Any car lift cylinder we open on the bench gets checked for all four failure modes before we quote a rebuild. If only one or two are present and the rod chrome and barrel bore are still clean where the seals ride, a rebuild is the right call. If three or four are present, we quote a replacement instead. We have watched too many shops pay for a seal kit twice on the same unit because nobody looked at the actual metal surfaces the first time around.
When a vehicle is stuck at height
We took a call from a private lift owner whose four-post 7,000-pound lift was leaking with a car at full height. The safety locks were engaged, but the fluid loss had the owner worried about lowering it safely. That is exactly the right instinct — do not try to bleed pressure off a cylinder with a vehicle stuck on it without a plan. The correct sequence: verify the mechanical safeties are seated on their stops, place rated jack stands under the runways as a redundant catch, then either bleed pressure controlled through the manual descent valve or wait for on-site service to arrive.
An Iowa tire shop had the same kind of call last year on a four-post when a car lift cylinder started dumping fluid mid-shift with a vehicle already on the deck. We drove out same-day, cribbed the runways with rated stands, and brought the vehicle down on the mechanical locks before ever touching the hydraulics. Getting the vehicle safely to the floor is always step one; the actual repair is step two, and it does not start until the load is off the machine.
Field-serviceable versus bench-only cylinder work
Some cylinder work happens on the post, and some requires bench time. Rod-seal replacement on many two-post designs can be done in place — we drop the reservoir pressure, pull the gland, service the seals, and reassemble without ever removing the cylinder from the column. Piston-seal work almost always requires cylinder removal because you have to slide the piston out through the barrel to reach the seal groove properly.
When we can, we do in-place work to save the customer the removal labor. When the failure mode requires bench work, we haul the cylinder back to Ames, service it under proper lighting and with the right tooling, and either return the same unit or install a replacement while the original is on the bench. Aging equipment: farm and light-industrial lifts
We take a lot of calls from farm shops running lifts nobody sells anymore. A recent one: a 10,000-pound car-and-truck lift, blue and yellow paint, twelve years old, cylinder on the same side as the motor, purchased from an out-of-state supplier that no longer answers the phone. That is a very common profile for a rural Iowa farm lift, and the cylinder is almost always replaceable even when the OEM is not around to help.
What we need to swap the cylinder on that kind of lift: bore, stroke, rod diameter, retracted length, mount style, and port size. We measure the old cylinder ourselves — sending photos alone is not enough for a lift with no factory documentation on file. When to replace the whole lift instead of the cylinder
Sometimes the honest answer is that the lift itself is not worth another repair. On a very old lift with a failing cylinder, worn cables, corroded arms, and no available parts, spending a couple thousand dollars on a hydraulics rebuild to keep a marginal machine running is not a good use of money. New two-post lifts start at a price point that pencils out against ongoing service costs on a twenty-year-old orphan brand that has already had two prior repairs.
