Center-clamp vs. rim-clamp on a Rotary machine
Rim-clamp machines grip the outer edge of the wheel with four jaws. Center-clamp machines grip the center bore with a cone through the hub, which eliminates any chance of the outer rim being scratched by clamping. For high-end and dealership work, center-clamp is usually the right answer. For general independent work and volume tire shops, rim-clamp is faster and cheaper, and modern Rotary jaws with proper protectors do not mark rims the way older machines used to.

A shop that touches a lot of 22-inch and larger performance wheels sees a real payoff from center-clamp. Motorcycle, ATV, and specialty tire capability
Not every shop can drop a sportbike wheel on a standard car changer without damaging the rim. Motorcycle wheels are narrower, the beads are stiffer for their size, and the clamping range on a standard machine often can’t grab them cleanly. We hear this from small-town Iowa shops constantly: a customer rolls in wanting a rear tire mounted, the shop tries it once on the car machine, marks a wheel, and never accepts motorcycle work again for the next five years.
Rotary offers motorcycle adapters that mount to the existing changer jaws and reset the clamping range for narrower bike wheels. A properly equipped tire changer is more than the base machine. Helper arms hold stiff sidewalls in place during mounting so the tech isn’t fighting the bead with a bar. Wheel guards protect finish on premium rims. TPMS-safe demount heads have plastic inserts that won’t crush a valve-stem sensor when the bead is broken. On a busy day, those accessories are the difference between clean mounts and a comeback for a scuffed rim or a killed sensor that the shop has to eat.
