Truck Lifts and Accessories: What Actually Earns Its Keep

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

We get asked constantly which truck lifts and accessories are worth spending on and which are just line items dealers pad quotes with. Auto Lift Services is based in Ames, Iowa, and we sell and install lifts across the state – Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Ankeny, Waterloo, Sioux City, Dubuque, Council Bluffs, Davenport. Because we install what we sell, we see which add-ons customers actually use two years later and which sit on the shelf collecting dust. Here is our honest read on truck lifts and accessories from a working shop’s point of view.

Rolling jacks: worth it for the shop that uses them

Rolling jacks are the accessory shop owners ask us about most often. They ride the runways of a 4-post lift and let you unload the suspension while the wheels stay in the air – critical for alignment, tire, and brake work on a drive-on lift. An Iowa city fleet shop we work with specified rolling jacks on their 14,000 lb drive-on lift specifically because they run alignment work on municipal fleet trucks and needed the suspension unloaded without pulling the truck off the lift.

Rolling jacks are not universal. If your 4-post is used mainly for storage or inspection, jacks are a waste. If your 4-post is a working alignment or tire lift, jacks are non-negotiable and we spec them with the lift from the start. The one mistake we see is buying a 4-post without jacks and adding them later – possible, but the retrofit cost is higher than specifying at order time. Related: rolling jack buying guide.

Truck adapters and stub-axle kits

Truck lifts and accessories go together most tightly on the adapter side. Standard 2-post arms and pads work for cars and half-ton pickups without any add-on. Once you start lifting 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks, especially with lift kits or custom suspension, factory pads may not reach the frame contact points cleanly. Adapter stack extensions – the tall pads that raise the contact point by 3, 6, or 9 inches – are the accessory that saves the most damage in the long run.

Stub-axle adapters are the second must-have for any shop doing brake, hub, or wheel-bearing work on trucks. When the wheel is off, the stub-axle adapter carries the hub directly so the truck stays on the lift without swinging. We keep them in stock in Ames for both Rotary and Challenger arms, and we ship the correct fit if you tell us the lift model when you call. If you are lifting a 2500 series pickup for a suspension lift install, the adapters are what make the job clean.

Air line kits and shop-air integration

An air line kit adds a shop-air feed up the column of a 2-post or through the runway of a 4-post, so the tech has an air hose at the vehicle without dragging a floor line under the lift. It is one of those quality-of-life accessories that shops either love or ignore. Independent shops running impact work and air tools at the vehicle level almost always want it. Shops that do mostly electrical or diagnostic work rarely bother.

Air line kits are one of the truck lifts and accessories that we quote by default when we know the shop’s work is impact-heavy – suspension, drivetrain, tire rotation. If you are doing that work, the payoff on the accessory is a matter of weeks in labor-saved time. If your shop is a diagnostic or electric-vehicle-focused operation, we leave it off the quote unless you ask. Same principle: quote what you will actually use, not what the dealer catalog lists. Alignment kits: bolt-on versus true alignment lift

A bolt-on alignment kit adds turntables and slip plates to a standard 4-post so you can do alignment work on a lift that was not originally an alignment lift. It is a cost-effective way to add alignment revenue without buying a dedicated alignment lift. But we are honest about the trade-off: a bolt-on kit is not the same as a true alignment-rated lift with the geometry and precision to match. If alignment is going to be a real revenue line for your shop, spec the alignment lift.

For shops adding occasional alignment to a general-service book, the bolt-on kit is legitimate. It carries turntables and slip plates that meet the geometry requirements for basic alignment, and it is bolted to the lift so it does not shift during work. Just do not expect it to compete with a Hunter Engineering rack in a dedicated alignment shop. That is not what it is for, and shops that buy it thinking it is get frustrated. Drive-over ramps and low-clearance vehicles

Drive-over ramps are a small accessory that solve a specific problem: lowered vehicles that scrape on the standard runway entrance of a 4-post. If your shop takes in performance cars, lowered pickups, or heavy-duty tow-eye vehicles, drive-over ramps let the vehicle roll onto the lift without dragging the front air dam or bumper. They are inexpensive and easy to install; they either matter to your work mix or they do not.

For a truck-focused shop, drive-over ramps matter more than you would think. Modified pickups, lifted trucks with front bumper accessories, and off-road builds all benefit from the gentler approach angle. We include drive-over ramps in truck-lift quotes for shops that mention any custom or lifted work in the mix. Iowa has a strong lifted-truck market – we get called about lifting Silverado 2500s and F-350s with 3.5 to 4.5 inch lifts often enough that ramps are on our default quote list.

Cables, cylinders, and wear parts to keep on hand

Truck lifts and accessories are not just the up-front add-ons. The wear parts you keep on the shelf are the accessories that keep the lift running. Equalizer cables stretch over years of use and eventually need replacement – a good cable set costs a fraction of a lift-down day. Hydraulic cylinders develop seepage and eventually need seal kits. Safety-lock latches wear and need adjustment or replacement. When these components fail unexpectedly, the whole lift is down.

Shops that call us about symptoms like shaking on the way up or dropping fast onto the locks are usually looking at cable and cylinder wear that could have been caught at annual inspection. We stock cables, cylinders, seal kits, and lock components in Ames for all major Rotary and Challenger lifts and can ship same day. If you are running a truck-rated lift on a heavy schedule, having a spare cable set on the shelf is not paranoia – it is uptime insurance. Related: lift cable replacement.

Adapters, air, jacks, ramps – and what we leave out of quotes

When we quote truck lifts and accessories, our default list is short: capacity-appropriate adapters, stub-axle kits if the shop does brake or hub work, rolling jacks if the shop does alignment, air line kit if the shop is impact-heavy, drive-over ramps if the shop sees lifted trucks. That is usually four to six line items on the accessories side of the quote. The truck lifts and accessories market has probably fifty more line items available, most of which sit on the shelf.

What we deliberately leave off unless you ask: multi-purpose adapter carts, decorative lift skirts, unnecessary safety add-ons that duplicate factory features, and dealer-branded merchandise that has nothing to do with lifting trucks. We are trying to build a lift you use for twenty years, not maximize a single invoice. Call 800-674-9302 or email [email protected] for an honest accessories quote. Related: lift parts catalog.
