What 2 post lift cables actually do

On a symmetric or asymmetric two-post lift, the hydraulic cylinders don’t lift the vehicle directly — they lift one carriage, and the 2 post lift cables tie both carriages together so they rise at the same rate. Two cables are routed over sheaves at the top of each column, cross the overhead cross-tube on overhead-style lifts or run through the floor plate on baseplate lifts, and terminate at anchor blocks on each carriage. This cable geometry is what makes both sides come up level under load.

When those cables are properly tensioned and the sheaves spin freely, the lift is smooth and quiet. When a cable stretches, jumps a sheave, or frays, the lift starts to tilt. Continue using it and the safety locks will catch — but only after the imbalance is severe enough to be dangerous to the vehicle and the person working underneath it. This is why our team recommends inspecting cables annually and replacing them at the very first sign of a broken strand.

How to tell when your cables need replacing

ALI’s inspection standard is clear: any broken strand in an equalizer cable is a mandatory replacement. Don’t wait for the second one. Beyond that, watch for four warning signs: visible fraying at the swage fitting where the cable meets the anchor, cable diameter reduction from wear where it crosses a sheave, rust from a shop that runs a floor scrubber or is near a wash bay, and uneven carriage travel where one side leads the other by more than an inch at ride height.

A recent call from an ag customer in central Iowa is textbook: the tech noticed the lift was leaning toward the back at ride height, so he ducked under, ran the lift down, and found the rear equalizer cable had lost several strands right at the fitting. We shipped a matched pair the next morning — cables are always replaced in pairs, never one at a time, because a fresh cable next to a stretched one throws the whole geometry off and the lift will lean the opposite direction within a week of the swap.

Cable length, diameter, and end fittings

Two-post 2 post lift cables are not universal. Length varies by lift capacity, column height, and whether the lift is overhead or baseplate style. Diameter is usually 3/8 inch on 9,000 to 12,000 lb lifts, 7/16 inch on 15,000 lb lifts, and 1/2 inch on 18,000 lb and heavier machines. The end fittings vary by manufacturer — some use a threaded stud with a stop nut, some a swaged ball, some a stop button that seats in a machined pocket at the carriage anchor. Ordering the wrong end fitting means the cable won’t seat and won’t tension.

The safest approach is to send us the model number and, if you can, a phone-camera photo of the old fitting. Rotary SPOA10, Challenger CL10, Forward CR10, and Mohawk two-post lifts all have their own cable part numbers, and Mohawk in particular publishes model-specific SKUs by column style. Replacing 2 post lift cables step by step

The high-level sequence: lower the lift onto its lowest locks, remove tension from the cables by backing off the adjuster nuts, disconnect both ends of each cable, thread the new cable through the same path over every sheave, seat both end fittings, and then re-tension the pair together. Most brands specify equal thread showing on both adjuster nuts as the initial setting, then a test cycle, then a final tension check with the carriages loaded to at least half rated capacity.

Two mistakes we see repeatedly on customer-attempted swaps: over-tensioning the adjuster nuts, which prematurely wears the sheaves and rounds the flanges, and mis-routing the cable over a sheave so it rides the flange instead of the groove. The most common cable failure modes we see

Across the invoices and photos our field team has archived over the years, cable failures cluster into a small set of causes. The biggest is a seized or dry sheave — when the sheave stops rotating, the cable slides across the flange and abrades on one side until it lets go. Second is a bent or damaged sheave from a dropped lift arm or vehicle impact, which shreds the cable strand by strand at every cycle. Third is corrosion, most often from body-shop paint booths, wash-bay overspray, or road salt tracked in on winter tires.

The fourth is simple age. Cables have a service life. A 20-year-old cable on a lift that’s been in a Ford dealership doing 15 cars a day has cycled hundreds of thousands of times, and even without visible damage, the metal fatigues. When a shop calls us with a cable that “just snapped” and shows a clean, flat break rather than a frayed one, that’s fatigue. We treat cables as consumables and quote them alongside pad inserts, hoses, and lock ladders on every annual inspection we do.

OEM vs aftermarket cables

We carry OEM 2 post lift cables from Rotary, Challenger, Forward, and Mohawk, and we also stock quality aftermarket cables for older or unbadged lifts where an OEM part is either unavailable or ludicrously priced. Aftermarket doesn’t mean lower quality — the wire itself is aircraft-grade rope, and reputable suppliers swage the end fittings to the same specification as the OEM. What separates a good cable from a bad one is the fitting quality and the swage pull test, not the wire itself.

Where we push customers toward OEM is on structural components like arms, carriages, and cylinders, where geometry and safety rating are proprietary. On cables, aftermarket is usually the right economic call for older lifts, and OEM is the right call when the lift is still under warranty or the shop wants an audit-clean paper trail for insurance. Either way, we stand behind what we ship. If a cable we sold fails prematurely from a manufacturing defect, we replace it and cover freight both ways.
