Getting garage lifts installed in a home shop
The home-shop install is not the same job as a commercial bay. You are usually working around a garage door, an entry door, a workbench along one wall, and a compressor tucked in a corner. Our crew shows up with a plan that keeps the lift accessible from three sides, clears the door path, and positions the power unit where you will not trip over the hose every time you walk to the tool box.

That is a textbook four-post use case, and once we walked through ceiling clearance and vehicle heights on the phone, the whole install came together in a single day. Ceiling height and pole-building compatibility
Ceiling height is the number that decides everything. A four-post storage lift with 82 inches of rise plus a 56-inch tall car on top plus safety clearance wants roughly 12 feet of usable overhead, sometimes a little less if the vehicle is short. A two-post service lift usually needs about 11 feet minimum, with 12 being comfortable. If you are building the shop from scratch, spec 12-foot walls minimum and you will not regret it.
Pole buildings are fully compatible with garage lifts installed at home. The slab is what carries the load, not the walls, so a 40×30 or 40×60 pole barn with a properly poured floor is a great home shop. What we do check is the truss configuration overhead — if there is a purlin or a truss chord right where the overhead crossbar or shutoff bar needs to be, we work with you on lift placement or a shorter overhead-limit option before install day.
4-post storage vs 2-post service for the home shop
The single biggest decision in a home shop is four-post versus two-post. A four-post is a rolling drive-on platform — perfect for storage, easy to park a car on and forget, forgiving on slab requirements, and great for oil changes and light service. A two-post is arms-under-the-frame — better for wheel-off work, brakes, exhaust, and anything where you need the wheels hanging.
Most home shops that plan to store a car should go four-post, and most home shops that plan to actually wrench should go two-post. Some homeowners buy both. We talked to a hobbyist last year who wanted to lift a passenger car around 7,000 pounds, do his own maintenance, and store a second vehicle underneath. Concrete requirements for garage lifts installed at home
For a two-post home lift in the 9,000 to 10,000-pound range, we want at least 4.25 inches of 3,000-PSI concrete, cured at least 28 days. Four-posts are more forgiving because the load spreads across four base plates, and most home four-posts are happy on standard 4-inch garage slab. If your slab is older or thinner, we will core-check on install day and shim or advise before we drill.
New builds have the advantage of pouring the slab to the lift spec from day one. If you are planning to have garage lifts installed in a new shop, tell your concrete contractor to pour at least 4.5 inches thick with fiber mesh or rebar, and cure a full 28 days before we anchor. That single decision at the pour phase eliminates the most common home-lift install problem we see, which is a slab that is a half-inch too thin at the anchor point.

The truck rolls with the lift itself, the anchor kit that matches the specific model, a rotary hammer with the right diamond bit, hydraulic fluid, torque wrenches, a laser level for column plumb, and every consumable the manual calls for. We do not show up expecting you to have shims or anchors — that is on us. What we do ask is that the space be clear on install morning: nothing on the floor where the lift is landing, and 220V power reasonably close if it is not already at the lift location.
A single home two-post drop-in typically finishes in a working day. A four-post is often a bit faster because there is no overhead cable routing. Multi-lift home installs — we occasionally do two lifts at the same shop when a homeowner is going all-in — usually spread across a day and a half. That was the pattern on a recent two-lift job at a small hobbyist shop in northern Iowa.
