Last spring we drove up to the Iowa Great Lakes region to install a 2 post car lift for an off-road and overlanding builder who’s been running his shop out of a converted implement barn near Spirit Lake. He was tired of doing tire rotations and wheel work on jack stands under three-quarter-ton lifted trucks, and he wanted something that would hold a Power Wagon with 37s and a full rack. This article is the case study — what we installed, why the arm restraints and safety-cam engagement mattered most, and what he learned across the first six months of use.

The barn we walked into (site conditions)

The building was a 40-year-old implement shed with a poured floor that turned out to be 6 inches thick — solid — but the ceiling clear height was only 11 feet 10 inches to the bottom of the exposed rafters. Overhead configuration was off the table before we ever unpacked. The builder had researched brands online and had convinced himself he wanted an overhead 2 post car lift because he’d seen one on YouTube. We measured for 15 minutes, showed him the ceiling number in inches, and switched the order to a Rotary SPOA10 baseplate. He was skeptical for about ten minutes; then we walked him through the arm envelope with a 22-inch tire on the pad and the ceiling stopped being an argument. Site prep was minimal — we needed 60 amps of 220-volt power, which he already had for a rotary phase converter running his welder, and we needed to core-drill eight anchor holes through the slab. The floor was flat within a quarter-inch across the column footprints, which is better than most old ag buildings in that part of Iowa.

Why arm restraints are the safety feature most buyers ignore

Arm restraints on a 2 post car lift are the small spring-loaded pins that engage when the arms are under load, locking them so they can’t swing free and drop the vehicle. Modern lifts — any Rotary, Challenger, Forward, or BendPak built in the last 20 years — have them as standard equipment. What buyers ignore is that arm restraints only work if they’re maintained. The pin should drop into the gear ring the moment the arm takes weight; if it doesn’t drop, the tech is one bad load-shift away from the arm swinging out from under a lifted truck. On the overlanding builder’s install we specifically walked him through the arm-restraint check as part of the daily open-shop routine. Wipe the arm-restraint gear ring with a rag before you use the lift the first time each day. Look for a chipped tooth. Confirm the pin drops cleanly. It takes 30 seconds and prevents the failure mode that kills people on lift equipment more often than any other single cause in ALI investigation records.

Safety-cam engagement: what your ears should hear

The primary mechanical safety on a 2 post car lift is not the hydraulic cylinder — it’s the mechanical safety cams that engage at each carriage as the lift raises. You should hear a distinct metallic click every 3 to 4 inches of travel as the cams ratchet past each safety tooth. If you don’t hear those clicks, stop and diagnose before putting a vehicle on. On the Iowa Great Lakes install, we spent 20 minutes with the builder standing at the columns as we ran the lift up and down empty, listening for the pattern. Rotary lifts have a distinctive rhythm that once you know, you’ll notice the moment it changes. If a spring on the safety pawl fatigues over years of use, the pawl stops engaging cleanly and the clicks become inconsistent. That is the failure mode that turns a hydraulic drift into a catastrophic drop. We stock the pawl springs and safety-cam parts for every major brand. Lifted trucks, oversize tires, and center-of-gravity math

The overlanding builder’s daily driver is a Ram Power Wagon with a 3-inch lift and 37-inch tires plus a bed rack, spare, and rooftop tent when it’s built for a customer. Loaded, it’s pushing 8,200 pounds. The stock Power Wagon frame is well-behaved on a lift — the pad points are OEM-marked and the weight distribution is reasonable. Add the lift kit and the rack, though, and the center of gravity moves up several inches, which changes what happens if the lift itself is uneven. On the arm setup, we deliberately spec’d the SPOA10 with the taller drop-end adapter set and did a dry lift to 12 inches with the loaded truck to verify the pads sat square before committing to a full raise. If your off-road build is heavier or taller than a stock Power Wagon, tell your installer up front — we may need to route arm adapters or specify a 12,000-pound-rated 2 post car lift instead of the base 10,000. A tire rotation on a poorly-loaded lifted truck is the exact moment a pad slips out.

Tire rotation on a Power Wagon: the actual workflow

For a straight tire rotation on the builder’s Power Wagon, the workflow on his new 2 post car lift is: pull in with the front tires just past the columns, engage parking brake, extend all four arms to the OEM pad points (front doors and rear pinch welds, marked on the frame), verify pad seating with a hand-tug on the arm, raise about 6 inches, walk around and confirm all four pads still square, then continue up to working height and let the safety cams engage. Total time from drive-in to wheels-in-the-air is around 3 minutes with a lift that’s already warm. From there, the rotation itself is a routine 20-minute job — pull all four tires, cross-rotate front to back on that side, torque back to spec, lower and go. Compared to jack stands on a lifted truck, this is night and day: safer for the tech, faster on the clock, and less back strain at the end of a full day of overlanding builds coming through the shop.

First six months: what broke, what didn’t

Six months in, we called the builder for a check-in. Nothing broke. He’d changed the hydraulic fluid once, greased the arm pivot points monthly, and wiped down the safety-cam gear rings weekly per our written checklist. The lift had done roughly 400 vehicle raises in that window — a mix of overlanding builds coming in for tire rotations, brake work, and skid plate installs. Two things surprised him. First, how much floor space he saved by lifting vehicles vertically instead of parking them nose-to-tail for work. He fits one more project truck in the barn than before. Second, the baseplate crossbeam turned out to be a non-issue — he tripped over it once in week one and never again. He’s now shopping for a second 2 post car lift for a barn expansion he’s planning for spring, and he’s already told us he wants the same SPOA10 baseplate configuration rather than experimenting with anything different. That is the strongest review a lift install gets from an off-road shop owner.

What we’d change if we did this Iowa Great Lakes install again

Looking back at the install, we’d change one thing: we’d have specified the taller-pad adapter set at the initial order rather than shipping it as a follow-up two weeks later. On a shop that runs almost exclusively lifted trucks, the standard drop-end pad heights are too short to reach the OEM pad points comfortably on 3-plus-inch suspension lifts. The tall adapters solve it, but they should have been part of the original build sheet. Everything else — the SPOA10 baseplate choice, the arm-restraint training, the safety-cam listening routine, the anchor pattern in six-inch concrete — held up perfectly through six months of hard shop use.
