The site survey we run before you buy a 2 post car lift

The site survey is where the safety story of a 2 post car lift begins. Before we quote a tire-and-alignment shop anywhere along the Iowa-Illinois corridor, we run a five-part check: concrete, ceiling, bay geometry, electrical, and workflow fit. Each of those five can kill a bad install before it starts, and each rewards a shop owner who takes ten minutes to gather the right information. We do not require an in-person visit for every corridor customer — photos, a tape measurement, and a short phone call cover most sites. If we cannot confirm a spec remotely, we drive out. A good survey does two things at once: it confirms that the shop’s building can safely carry the lift you want, and it flags any prep work — coring a slab, adding a circuit, moving a duct — that has to happen before install day. Sites that fail the survey are not lost sales; they are sales that need a week of prep first. We would rather walk a customer through that prep than watch a lift install go sideways on install day.

Concrete: thickness, age, and rebar

Concrete is the first hard failure point for a 2 post car lift install. Every major manufacturer — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas — publishes a minimum thickness and PSI rating in the install manual. Ten-thousand-pound commercial lifts commonly call for four inches of thirty-two-hundred-PSI concrete cured a minimum of twenty-eight days. Twelve-thousand-pound and up may require four-and-a-half or five inches. Thickness is only half the story. Age matters: a fresh pour needs full cure time before you drop anchors. Rebar helps but does not substitute for thickness. Old pours can be tested by coring a small sample. Cracks near an anchor pattern are a bigger deal than cracks elsewhere. When we run a corridor site survey, we look at concrete condition, ask about original build plans, and — if the site is old or unknown — recommend a core test before we commit to an anchor pattern. Underspec concrete does not mean you cannot install; it means we may need to pour a pad within a pad under each column foot, which adds a week and some cost.

Ceiling clearance: overhead vs baseplate math

The second hard failure point for a 2 post car lift is ceiling clearance. An overhead configuration has a crossbeam that spans between the two columns and adds vertical height above the columns themselves. Most ten-thousand-pound overhead lifts want a minimum ceiling of about twelve feet. Baseplate configurations move the equalization mechanism to the floor, eliminating the overhead beam, and can fit under roughly eleven feet. If your bay is tight, we measure at the lowest obstruction in the bay — a duct, a sprinkler, a light fixture — not the peak of the ceiling. That number decides the config. A customer who measures the peak and orders overhead only to find a duct in the way loses install day. We walk every tire-and-alignment shop through the measurement process on the phone, and we ask for a photo of the bay showing every overhead obstruction between the front and back walls. Ceiling math is not glamorous, but it is what saves an install.

Bay width, door width, and the drive-through path

A 2 post car lift needs enough bay width for the columns plus safe walk-around clearance, plus a drive-through path from the door to the pad area. We measure bay width at the columns and add roughly eighteen inches on each side for tech walk-around. We measure door width against the widest vehicle the shop expects to service. On the Iowa-Illinois corridor most tire-and-alignment shops fit fine, but older buildings can have narrow overhead doors that cannot accommodate a full-size dually or a work van. If the drive-through path bends around a workbench or a compressor, we flag that too — techs backing a car around obstacles are a source of dented columns. Bay width also affects arm choice: symmetric arms want a wider bay because the vehicle centers between the columns; asymmetric arms are more forgiving. When we run a survey, we take the shop’s smallest bay dimension and work outward from there.

Electrical: single-phase, three-phase, and where to land the drop

A 2 post car lift needs electrical service to the power unit — typically two-hundred-twenty-volt single-phase or three-phase depending on the model. Most Iowa-Illinois corridor tire-and-alignment shops are single-phase, and most Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas commercial lifts have a single-phase option in this class. If the shop has three-phase available, the three-phase power unit is quieter and lasts longer, but it is not a hard requirement. We ask the shop owner to check the panel for available amperage — a twenty-amp double-pole breaker is typical for a ten-thousand-pound single-phase lift. Where the electrical drop lands matters too: the power unit sits on one column, and a drop cord across the drive-through path is a trip hazard. We route the drop overhead or up the column during install. When we survey a site, we photograph the panel, confirm available capacity with the shop’s electrician, and plan the drop route before install day.

Oil-change workflow: pad placement and undercar access

The last piece of the survey is workflow. A 2 post car lift for a tire-and-alignment shop doing oil changes needs pads that reach factory lift points on every vehicle in the daily mix and enough undercar clearance for a drain pan and a rolling waste-oil cart. On asymmetric lifts, drop-end pad extensions handle high frame rails on trucks; on symmetric lifts, taller stack adapters do the same. We ask for the shop’s ten most-common vehicles and match pad options to that list. Undercar clearance under the vehicle at full lift needs to allow a tech to stand upright comfortably; that is a column-height and lift-stroke question. For most oil-change work, a ten-thousand-pound commercial lift at full extension gives close to six feet of undercar space. The safety checklist we hand off after every install

Daily: verify safety locks engage audibly on every raise, verify equalization by watching both carriages match through the full stroke, and verify arm restraints latch when arms are extended. Monthly: visual cable inspection using the rag-slide test, hydraulic fluid level check, and column-plumb check with a level. Annual: ALI-authorized inspection, cable and hose condition, safety-lock function test, and anchor-bolt torque check.
