Why a truck shop even needs a 2 post car lift
Medium-duty truck work does not have to happen on a mobile column set. For anything the shop can drive in the door and set with a lift arm, a 15,000 or 18,000 lb 2 post car lift is faster, cheaper, and lower-maintenance than a mobile column. This shop runs a lot of brake and rotor jobs on medium-duty box trucks and lighter Class 4 chassis. Rotors come off best when the wheel is off the ground and the tech is standing straight up, and 2-post arms clear the front wheels for full access to hubs and calipers. The mobile columns still get used weekly for the biggest chassis. But the 2 post car lift covers 70 percent of the shop’s rolling stock, and that is where the labor hours live.
Choosing capacity: 15K, 18K, or heavier
A 15,000 lb capacity 2 post car lift will pick up almost every light medium-duty truck under a 4500 chassis empty. An 18K will pick up a loaded medium-duty. Because brake work is often done with a partial load, we usually push shops to size up one bracket. The delta on a 15K to an 18K is not huge relative to the total project. What is not negotiable is column height. Medium-duty trucks with tall cabs need a 12 foot 6 inch tall lift or taller, and a lot of standard 2-post 15K models top out at 12 feet even. For this Iowa-Nebraska shop we specced a Rotary SPO18 configuration with tall columns. That gave real clearance for the biggest chassis in the door, plus enough overhead to swing a box on the way in.
Lift purchase: what a real quote looks like
The lift itself is the biggest line but not the only one. A commercial-grade 15K clear-floor overhead 2 post car lift lands in the mid five figures at MAP pricing across the major brands we sell. An 18K goes up a bracket from there. Add a truck-adapter pad and stack set (mandatory for medium-duty pickup frame rails, several hundred dollars), a set of low-profile drive-over ramps if the shop wants to hop lighter vehicles in and out quickly (a couple hundred), and any air line kit or add-on rolling jack (not standard on a 2-post but shops sometimes want a spotter jack under the differential). Freight, delivery, and unloading on the border
Freight for a 15K to 18K 2 post car lift is roughly six to eight hundred pounds a column plus the power unit and hardware, palletized to a pair of standard skids. LTL carriers charge by class and weight and always add lift-gate service if the shop has no forklift. This border shop had a forklift with 6,000 lb capacity, so we saved him the lift-gate fee. Delivery windows on rural border addresses are notoriously loose; we build a two-day window into every install so we are not paying for downtime if the carrier misses their promise. Once the pallets are on the shop floor we can typically be columns-up within four hours if the survey was clean. Shops in true remote pockets sometimes see LTL surcharges from certain carriers, and we quote those upfront rather than surprising the owner on the invoice.
Install labor and slab work
Install labor for a 2 post car lift runs about eight to twelve hours for two techs on a clean site, plus a return trip at 30 days for the torque re-check. Slab work is where budgets fall apart. If a shop has a five-inch or thicker slab of 3,500 psi concrete with real reinforcement, install is straightforward. If the slab is thin or unknown, the shop either accepts a spot pour under both columns (a modest add) or a full-bay pour (a much larger number and 28 days of cure time). This border shop had a 2016 six-inch slab poured for the mobile-column business, so we skipped the pit. Electrical is usually a couple hundred dollars if the sub-panel is nearby and thousands if it is not. We break these out on the estimate so the owner knows what depends on his existing shop condition and what depends on the lift.
Warranty coverage and claim workflow
A commercial 2 post car lift from a major brand typically carries a five-year structural warranty on columns and carriages, two years on the power unit and hydraulic components, and one year on wear parts like cables and pads. That is the industry norm across Rotary and Challenger on the commercial line. What matters more than the term is who handles a claim. If you buy freight-only from a marketplace, the manufacturer’s warranty is with you; you diagnose, you order the part, you install the part. When we install a 2 post car lift, we own the diagnosis.
