An asymmetric lift is a two-post lift with rotated columns and staggered-length arms, designed to let the vehicle sit slightly rearward between the posts so the driver can open the door without hitting the column. What an asymmetric lift actually is

The word “asymmetric” describes two design decisions working together. First, the columns rotate about 30 degrees so that the arms swing toward the front and rear of the vehicle at an angle rather than straight out. Second, the front arms are shorter than the rear arms, which shifts the vehicle’s center of gravity slightly rearward between the columns. The combined effect is that the driver’s door and passenger door open into the space between the columns instead of into the columns themselves. For a shop that opens hundreds of doors a week, that clearance saves paint, saves techs’ knuckles, and saves customer complaints.

A symmetric lift, by contrast, has square columns and equal-length arms that spread the vehicle evenly between the two posts. Symmetric lifts are the right answer for very heavy or oversized vehicles where you need equal weight distribution across all four arms — think dually pickups, work vans, and the taller SUVs. Versymmetric or “combo” lifts try to give shops the best of both worlds with adjustable-position arms that can be run either symmetric or asymmetric depending on the vehicle. Most modern general-service shops in Iowa run either an asymmetric or a versymmetric.

When you should choose asymmetric

Choose an asymmetric lift if the majority of vehicles you service are cars and small SUVs. In an Iowa independent shop that mostly sees sedans, crossovers, and half-ton pickups, an asymmetric layout gets the driver door open without hitting the column every single time. That is the entire reason the design exists. Techs like it because they can walk into the vehicle without turning sideways. Detailers like it because the door is not scraping paint on a metal column. Customers do not notice, which is exactly the point.

Popular asymmetric two-post lifts we install in Iowa include the Rotary SPOA10, Challenger CL10, and Forward CL10. All three are 10,000-lb rated, all three have asymmetric column geometry, and all three are workhorses in the independent-shop segment. The Rotary version has a slight edge on cable and cylinder design longevity in our experience; the Challenger version has the best arm-restraint mechanism; and the Forward is essentially the same lift built in the same Rotary factory. Any of the three will serve a shop well for 15+ years with proper maintenance.

When symmetric still makes more sense

Choose a symmetric lift if you service a lot of dually pickups, larger vans, ambulances, box trucks, or oversized SUVs. The equal-length arms and square-column geometry let you distribute the load more evenly across a longer wheelbase. A symmetric lift with 12,000 or 15,000-lb capacity is the right answer for a heavy-truck or fleet shop. The other case for symmetric is a shop that already has bay widths sized for symmetric equipment. If a shop has ten-foot bay widths and a symmetric lift already fits, swapping to asymmetric may not gain anything meaningful. And if you regularly work on vehicles with the front axle very far forward — older trucks, some vans, and certain fleet vehicles — a symmetric spread of the arms can actually be safer. This is where a versymmetric lift shines: you get both configurations in one piece of equipment and you pick per-vehicle.

Versymmetric — the compromise that mostly works

Versymmetric lifts have adjustable arm layouts — usually four arms that can pivot into either an asymmetric front-short / rear-long layout or a symmetric all-equal layout, depending on how the tech positions them. This is the right choice for a general shop that sees a truly mixed vehicle mix week to week. It is a few hundred dollars more than a pure asymmetric lift, and in exchange you get the flexibility to safely lift a lifted duallly on Monday and a Miata on Tuesday from the same lift.

The tradeoff is complexity. A versymmetric lift has more moving parts in the arm assemblies, which means slightly more to maintain and slightly more to potentially adjust over time. We service versymmetric lifts across Iowa and the failure rate is low, but it is not zero. For most independent shops running mixed vehicle mixes, we recommend versymmetric. For shops with a specialized niche — import cars only, or heavy trucks only — we recommend the pure symmetric or asymmetric that matches the niche.

Bay width, ceiling height, and slab requirements

An asymmetric lift needs about 12 feet of ceiling clearance for a standard 10,000-lb model with a mid-size SUV in the air. Slab requirements are the same as symmetric — four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, six inches recommended for higher-cycle shops. Bay width is where asymmetric and symmetric diverge slightly. An asymmetric lift positions the columns closer together (usually 8 to 9 feet inside-to-inside), which fits well into standard shop bay widths. Symmetric heavy-duty lifts sometimes require wider bays because the column spacing runs 10 or 11 feet.

Installation, service, and the long tail

Installing an asymmetric lift is essentially the same process as a symmetric — anchor the columns, plumb them, run hydraulics, wire the motor, cycle the empty lift, then load-test. The asymmetric column rotation adds one small step: we make sure the column-lean angle is correct before we anchor. If those columns are rotated wrong, the arms will not clear the doors when you actually use the lift, and rotating anchored columns is a bad time. We measure twice, drill once.

Service is also similar to symmetric. Cables, cylinders, hoses, arm restraints, and lock latches all wear at similar rates on asymmetric and symmetric lifts.
