Two Configurations to Compare for CV Axle Work

Option one was a symmetric overhead-cable two-post at ten thousand pounds. Option two was a symmetric baseplate two-post at the same capacity. Both handle a passenger car or light truck comfortably. The overhead configuration keeps the floor between the columns fully clear, which matters when you drop a CV axle and slide it across the bay to a bench. The baseplate configuration keeps the ceiling completely clear, which matters when your bay has a low truss bottom or you plan to run cranes above. For auto lifts for home garage CV work, we usually lean overhead when the ceiling is over eleven feet and lean baseplate when the ceiling is under eleven feet. The workflow difference on axle-drop day is not subtle.

The 110V Single-Phase Reality for Home Garages

Most home garage lifts do not run on 110 volt single-phase power. That is the surprise for first-time buyers. Almost every symmetric two-post lift we sell for home use wants 208 to 240 volt single-phase, drawing roughly twenty amps at start and settling to fifteen amps under load. If your only bay circuit is a fifteen-amp 110V outlet, the lift will not run. On the Iowa-Missouri border job, the shop had 240V already for a MIG welder, and we tapped that panel for a dedicated thirty-amp branch to the lift disconnect. Three-Phase: Rare in a Home Bay, but Worth Explaining

Three-phase 208 or 460 volt power is standard in commercial shops and almost unheard of in home garages. Three-phase lifts have simpler power units, longer motor life, and lower amp draw per line, but they require the utility to run three-phase to the meter, which is a huge cost outside city limits. On this border job, three-phase was never on the table. Ninety-five percent of auto lifts for home garage buyers we work with run single-phase for that reason. If you ever move a home lift to a commercial building, most manufacturers offer swap power units that convert single-phase to three-phase without changing the lift, which is a nice hedge if you think a future move is possible.

Amperage, Breakers, and the Circuit You Actually Need

The specific circuit for a symmetric ten thousand pound two-post on 240V single-phase is a thirty-amp double-pole breaker feeding a NEMA 6-30 disconnect within line of sight of the power unit. Wire is 10-gauge THHN in half-inch EMT conduit for runs under fifty feet. Longer runs step up to 8-gauge for voltage drop. On the Iowa-Missouri border, we ran forty-two feet from panel to disconnect and stayed at 10-gauge with about a three percent voltage drop at start. That is well inside spec. Side-by-Side: BendPak 2-Post vs. Atlas Baseplate

For the border job, the finalist configurations were a BendPak overhead two-post and an Atlas baseplate two-post, both symmetric at ten thousand pounds. BendPak wins on arm restraint engagement quality, safety cable routing, and finish. Atlas wins on ceiling clearance in a low-truss building and on entry price. For CV axle work specifically, the BendPak’s slightly wider arm swing gave better clearance to slide a full-length half-shaft out of the vehicle without hitting a column. That decided the buy. The Atlas is a perfectly good lift for tire rotation and brake work in a low-ceiling bay. For a shop owner who wanted CV work as the primary use case, the BendPak paid for its price difference in workflow within a few weekends.

Which Configuration Wins for CV and Half-Shaft Work

Our recommendation: for CV axle and half-shaft replacement in an eleven-foot-plus ceiling home bay, a symmetric overhead-cable two-post around ten thousand pounds is the honest winner. It gives you full floor clearance to slide an axle out, arms that swing wide enough to clear the wheel wells, and power-unit headroom on a standard 240V thirty-amp circuit. Auto lifts for home garage buyers with lower ceilings should look at baseplate configurations instead, accepting a slightly cluttered floor for a completely clear overhead. Whichever you pick, verify the electrical panel has room for a thirty-amp double-pole breaker before you sign anything. That single check prevents almost every install-day delay we see.
