Why model specs matter more than brand names
Every brand in this range advertises the same handful of numbers — capacity, height, length, width. Most buyers glance at capacity and move on. That’s a mistake. Two 9,000-pound four-posts from two different brands can differ by six inches of rise, a foot of runway length, and eight inches of overall width. Those differences decide whether your car fits over the top, whether you can walk between the columns and the wall, and whether the loft you were counting on for headroom is now the thing bumping the lift. The family in Marion had done their homework — three tabs open, spec sheets side by side, highlights on the specs that mattered to them. What they were missing was translation. A 74-inch outside runway width sounds precise; what they wanted to know was whether their sedan’s tires would sit in the middle of the runway or hang off the edge. Spec sheets tell you the truth but they don’t tell you the story. Our job on that call was to translate the numbers into what actually happens when you park a car on the lift and walk away for six months of winter storage.
Rise height: what a 9,000-pound four-post actually gets you
Capacity and rise are two different specs and buyers mix them up all the time. A 9,000-pound four-post from Rotary or Challenger will lift a Suburban to around 70 to 75 inches of rise at the top lock, depending on model. A BendPak or Atlas home-storage four-post in the same weight class runs similar numbers but not identical — some are shorter on rise for lower-ceiling garages. That rise number is the critical one for storage. You need enough room over the tires for the underside of the stored car to clear the roof of the car parked underneath. The rule of thumb we give is: take your parked car’s roof height, add three inches of clearance, and that’s the rise you need at minimum. For most passenger cars parked under an SUV, you need 60 to 65 inches. For an SUV over a truck, you need every inch the lift will give. This is why the four-post spec sheet is the one to obsess over if you’re storing. Not the capacity. The rise at each lock, published as a table.
Runway length and wheelbase math for stored vehicles
Runway length is the second spec that hides trouble. Home-storage four-posts run in a few standard lengths — the shorter models around 14 feet of usable runway, the extended models pushing 17 or 18 feet. Your wheelbase plus your overhangs need to fit inside the runway with a couple inches to spare, or you’re either hanging tires off the ends or fighting to line up the ramps. The Marion family wanted to store a mid-sixties muscle car — long wheelbase, long overhangs. The stock runway on the model they were eyeing was tight. Adding the extended runway option gave them the length and cost less than picking a bigger lift class. That’s a spec-sheet decision that most buyers don’t know they can make. We also check the runway width against the vehicle’s track width — you want the tires centered on the runway, not riding an edge. Every brand publishes runway width and length in inches. Print the sheet. Measure your car. Do the addition. That five-minute exercise is what separates good auto lifts for home garage decisions from bad ones.
Column footprint versus useable bay width
The column footprint is where lifts fool you. The published overall width of a four-post might be 130 inches — that’s outside of column to outside of column. But you have to walk between the column and the wall. You have to open the driver’s door of the vehicle stored on top. And if you’re using the lift as working headroom for another vehicle underneath, that door needs to open too. We tell every Marion-area buyer to subtract three inches from wall to column for hand clearance, and to open every door on both vehicles in that footprint before signing. Overall width matters, but useable bay width matters more. A 30-by-40 pole building with a 12-foot side wall will fit almost any four-post in this class if you plan the door swings. A narrower bay or a shop with a workbench along one wall might not. Column bases are also wider than the columns themselves; they eat floor real estate you were counting on for a rolling toolbox. Locking positions and the “two-and-a-half inch clicks”
One of the questions the Marion family kept coming back to was whether the lift was all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down, or whether it stopped somewhere in the middle. Reasonable question. On a four-post, there are locks about every two to two-and-a-half inches all the way up the columns. You choose the height by pumping to your target and letting the lift settle into the nearest lock. That matters for two reasons. First, storage — you can park at whatever rise leaves your under-car clearance safe without wasting ceiling. Second, working — if you’re doing brakes or an oil change and don’t need the car way up in the air, you can settle at a comfortable working height. Cheaper mid-rise scissors don’t do this; they’re either up or down. That’s one of the honest reasons a four-post costs more than a scissor for the same weight class. The locks are the reason. Reading a spec sheet before you sign the PO
Every manufacturer publishes a two-page spec sheet for every model. Get it. Print it. Highlight capacity, rise at each lock, minimum and maximum runway length, runway width, overall length, overall width, column footprint, ceiling clearance required, and power requirements. Do the same for two other models in the same class. Lay them side by side. If a spec is missing on one and present on another, ask for it — a good manufacturer publishes everything. If a distributor won’t send you the sheet, that tells you what you need to know about the distributor.
