The choice between an overhead and a baseplate two-post lift is the specific fork in the road that most auto lifts for home garage buyers only learn about after they have committed. A farm shop owner near Council Bluffs called us wanting to install a two-post for CV axle and half-shaft work in a converted machine shed. His ceiling was tall but not extreme, his floor was uneven, and he had never bought a lift before. We used his call to build the exact checklist below. Overhead vs baseplate, in plain terms

An overhead two-post routes the equalization cable and the hydraulic hose across a beam that runs above the vehicle. A baseplate two-post routes them across a plate that runs across the floor between the columns. That is the whole geometry difference. Overhead needs more ceiling; baseplate needs less. Baseplate puts a bar on the floor you have to step over; overhead does not. Everything else — cable service life, safety locks, arm designs — is the same across both, on a given brand. For auto lifts for home garage buyers, the correct answer is whichever geometry your ceiling and workflow prefer, not which one is fancier.

Item one: measure your true ceiling clearance

Take a ladder into the bay and measure from the finished floor to the lowest thing above where the lift will stand. That means the lowest truss chord, the lowest light fixture, the lowest garage door track. Not to the ridge — nobody works up there. If your true clearance is 12 feet or more, overhead fits comfortably on almost every home garage two-post. If your clearance is between 10 and 12 feet, overhead still fits most models but read the spec sheet for the exact lift. Under 10 feet, baseplate becomes the honest answer. Our Council Bluffs caller measured 11 feet 6 inches, which comfortably fit an overhead model. If he had measured 9 feet 6 inches, we would have quoted him a baseplate and moved on.

Item two: think about tripping and traffic flow

Baseplate lifts have a floor bar between the columns. It is not tall, and it is not dangerous when you know it is there, but it is a trip hazard when you are backing out with a driveshaft in your hands. Overhead lifts leave the floor between the columns completely clean. If your workflow involves dragging long parts — driveshafts, exhaust, half-shafts — through the bay a lot, overhead is more comfortable. For a farm shop doing CV axle and half-shaft work on light and midweight trucks, we usually push overhead when the ceiling allows, because those axle assemblies get dragged in and out of the bay all day.

Item three: CV axle work and arm reach

CV and half-shaft work usually happens at chest height, on the front of a vehicle, with the wheels off. The arms need to reach the frame lift points on a car, a light pickup, and sometimes a midsize SUV without swinging into a bench. Verify the lift you are considering has telescoping arms both front and back and that the arm restraints lock positively. Ask the seller whether they stock the arm-pin springs and pad rubbers as replacement SKUs. On both overhead and baseplate models the arm hardware is the same class of part — you want it stocked either way.

Item four: slab and floor flatness

Both overhead and baseplate two-posts need a solid slab under each column footprint. Baseplate lifts are actually a little more forgiving of slight column-height variation because the floor plate ties the columns rigidly together. Overhead lifts tolerate a small ceiling-side shim more gracefully. In practice, either lift installed on a good 4-inch slab of 3,000 PSI concrete works fine. Both need anchor bolts driven straight and torqued to spec. On our Council Bluffs caller’s machine-shed floor, we shimmed the columns to bring the arms level. That is standard on a real barn floor, no matter which configuration you choose.

Item five: safety locks and release mechanisms

Both configurations use the same mechanical safety locks: pawl engages a slot every couple of inches on the way up. Both configurations release the same way: a single lever or a synchronized dual-column release. What differs slightly is where the release cable runs. On overhead lifts it usually runs across the top; on baseplate lifts it runs low. Either is fine. What you should verify is that the release feels positive and that there is a documented replacement part number for the release cable and the pawl springs. Item six: what we would pick and why

For a farm shop owner with 11-plus feet of clear ceiling, doing CV axle and half-shaft work as the primary use case, we would pick an overhead two-post lift from Rotary or Challenger. The reasons: cleaner floor between the columns, the parts pipeline that both brands support, and the reality that CV axle work involves a lot of dragging that a floor bar does not help with. If the ceiling were shorter, we would pick a baseplate from the same brands and never look back.
