A Des Moines metro pro shop owner called us last month asking whether auto lifts for home garage duty could handle real wheel bearing work on evenings and weekends. He runs his own bay at the shop but wanted a lift at home for family vehicles and side projects. Fair question, and one we hear from Ankeny, Urbandale, and Waukee shop owners a few times a month. Our answer usually comes down to laying two configurations side by side and walking through how each one actually lives in a residential bay.

What a second bay at home actually costs you to lay out
The Des Moines metro homeowner-mechanic problem is space. Your shop bays were designed around the lift. A home garage was designed around parking, and everything else came second. So before we talk models, we talk layout. On the residential side we look at three numbers: ceiling height under the truss (not to the peak), slab thickness, and door-swing clearance from the columns. A recent Waukee build had 11 feet 6 inches clear under the trusses, a 4-inch slab poured to 4,000 psi, and 26 inches from the overhead door frame to where the front column had to sit. That is a workable envelope, but it steered us toward asymmetric arms. If we had centered a symmetric on that pad, the front arm would swing into the door track every time the customer raised a truck. Doing the layout first keeps us from selling you a lift that fights the building it sits in for the next twenty years.
Configuration A: the symmetric two-post
A symmetric two-post has equal-length arms front and back, columns squared to the vehicle, and load centered between the posts. It is the workhorse configuration for heavier trucks. A 10,000 or 12,000 pound symmetric will lift a loaded three-quarter-ton pickup all day without leaning. For wheel bearing service on a truck, symmetric wins because you can walk 360 degrees around the hub without stepping over an arm, and the pads sit under the frame right where the manufacturer wants the load. The tradeoff is door access. Symmetric columns want the vehicle centered, which means on most sedans the driver’s door opens straight into the front arm. If your home bay sees mostly trucks and SUVs and no small cars, symmetric is the honest answer even in a home garage. It is simpler mechanically, cheaper per pound of capacity, and easier to service ten years from now when a cable or cylinder finally needs attention. That last point matters more than most first-time buyers realize.
Configuration B: the asymmetric two-post
Asymmetric arms are shorter in front, longer in back, with the columns rotated about 30 degrees inward. That geometry pushes the vehicle’s center of gravity back, letting the driver open the door between the columns instead of into the front arm. For a home garage that sees both a family sedan and a personal project truck, asymmetric is usually the right call. Wheel bearing service on a car is easier because you are not stepping across an arm to reach the hub, and the front arm tucks back under the rocker. The tradeoff is capacity distribution. Asymmetric lifts carry the same total rating, but the front-versus-rear load balance narrows the acceptable vehicle envelope. A short-bed pickup fits fine. A long-wheelbase dually or a crew-cab three-quarter-ton starts pushing the limit. We spec asymmetric for roughly 60 percent of Des Moines metro home installs, and it is almost always the right pick when the bay is going to see both cars and trucks under it.
Wheel bearing work: how each configuration actually feels
This is where a paper-spec comparison hits real wrenching. On a symmetric two-post, you set the arms wide, drop the pads under the pinch welds or frame rails, and raise. Pulling a wheel bearing on a truck, you have clean sight lines to the caliper, ABS sensor, and hub bolts, and you can swing an air ratchet in a full arc. On asymmetric, the same job on a truck feels a little more cramped in front because the arm is angled back, so you end up working around it. But on a car, asymmetric is a dream. The front wheel is completely exposed, and you can lay a fender cover down and lean in without an arm in your ribs. If wheel bearings and brake work are 90 percent of what you do at home and you drive both a Camry and an F-150, the honest recommendation is asymmetric. If you only work on trucks, symmetric. That is the whole decision tree.
Slab, ceiling height, and door swing: the residential numbers
For any 10,000 pound two-post, which is the size most home bays end up at, our numbers are: 4-inch minimum slab, 3,000 psi minimum concrete, 24 inches minimum from column base to any expansion joint or visible crack. On ceiling, an overhead-plate 10K needs about 12 feet to fully raise a mid-size sedan, and a symmetric truck lift wants closer to 12 feet 6 inches to clear a crew cab at full lift. Floorplate (baseplate) two-posts trade about a foot of drive-through height for lower overall column height, which can save a home garage where the ceiling is a flat 10 feet. On door swing, we measure from the outer column edge to any door track, water heater, or workbench and want at least 6 inches of clearance for the arm swing. Those are the numbers we bring on a tape measure when we do a free site visit anywhere in the Des Moines metro, and they are the numbers we quote from.
Auto lifts for home garage: sizing to a 24×30 or 30×40 shop
The two most common home shop footprints we install auto lifts for home garage use into are 24×30 (three-car attached) and 30×40 (small pole-barn shop). Both work, but the layout looks different. In a 24×30, you are typically dedicating one 12×24 bay to the lift and losing that parking spot when a car is up in the air. That is fine because most homeowners just move the daily driver outside when they are wrenching. In a 30×40 pole barn, you can dedicate a full 15×30 bay to the lift and still have room for a workbench along one wall and a parts washer in the corner. We also see 40×60 shops where owners run two lifts side by side. The other real decision on auto lifts for home garage sizing is whether a 4-post storage-oriented setup makes more sense than a 2-post service setup. What we handle, what your electrician takes care of
Every install we quote in the Des Moines metro includes unloading the lift off the freight truck, laying it out on the slab, drilling and setting anchors to the manufacturer’s torque spec, plumbing hydraulic lines and bleeding air, connecting cables and pulleys, powering the motor, and running the full ALI safety-lock cycle before we leave the driveway. What we do not do is run new electric back to the panel. Most 10K lifts need a dedicated 220V 20-amp circuit, and some single-phase 110V versions run on 15 amps. That is an electrician’s scope, and we are happy to coordinate with yours or recommend one we have worked with in the metro. We also do not pour or repair concrete.
