Overhead versus baseplate is one of the most muddled decisions in the auto lifts for home garage market, and it is the decision an Urbandale EV specialty shop owner asked us to sort out for his home shop last month. He was doing general daily maintenance on his own EV inventory at home in the evenings, wanted a proper two-post, and had heard three different opinions from three different sales reps about which configuration was safer. All three of them were partly wrong. Here is what an installer who has bolted down both types actually thinks about the difference.

Myth: Overhead Lifts Need More Ceiling Height

The overhead crossbar does add height, but not as much as the myth suggests. On most Rotary and Challenger two-post lifts, an overhead configuration wants roughly 11 to 12 feet of ceiling clearance, and a baseplate configuration wants roughly 10 to 11. The difference is a foot, give or take. In an Urbandale home shop with 12-foot walls and open trusses, both fit. In a 10-foot residential garage, both may struggle, and you may actually be looking at a scissor or mid-rise lift instead. The overhead-versus-ceiling myth gets passed around because a couple of the taller commercial models genuinely do need 13-plus feet, and buyers assume that number applies to every auto lifts for home garage overhead model. It does not.

Myth: Baseplate Lifts Are Weaker Because of the Floor Crossmember

Wrong. The floor crossmember on a baseplate lift ties the two columns together at the base and takes shear load off the anchors. It is a structural advantage, not a weakness. The tradeoff is that you have a metal plate running across the floor between the columns, which most Urbandale EV drivers roll over easily but which can catch the belly of a very low car. If your EV inventory sits below about five inches of ground clearance, the baseplate can be a hassle. If you are working on standard-height passenger cars and crossovers, the baseplate does not bother the drive-in at all. Auto lifts for home garage buyers with a mix of vehicles usually go overhead just to keep the floor clean.

Myth: Overhead Auto Lifts for Home Garage Use Have Longer Cable Life

The equalizer cables run through the overhead crossbar on an overhead lift, and through the floor crossmember on a baseplate lift. Both configurations use similar cable diameters and pulley sizes. Both wear the cables at roughly the same rate, driven by cycle count and lubrication, not by which crossbar houses them. What can differ is inspection ease. Overhead cables are visible and easy to inspect once you know where to look. Baseplate cables are hidden in the floor crossmember and harder to inspect without removing a cover. If you are an EV shop owner who wants to eyeball your cables every quarter, overhead makes that habit easier. But cable life itself does not favor either configuration. Myth: Baseplate Lifts Trip People

The baseplate crossmember is low, wide, and painted safety yellow on every model we install. In four years of installing baseplate lifts in home garages, we have not had a single customer report a tripping issue. What we have seen is one customer catch a compressor hose on the crossmember. If you route hoses along the floor, the baseplate can snag them. That is a workspace layout problem, not a lift design problem. Route your hoses overhead on reels and the baseplate crossmember disappears from your daily awareness. The EV shop owner in Urbandale was more worried about this than he needed to be, and after a week of ownership he never thought about it again.

Myth: You Can’t Do Overhead in an Uninsulated Pole Barn

You can. What you cannot do is bolt the overhead crossbar directly to a truss that was not sized for lift load. If your pole barn has standard trussing, the overhead crossbar is column-mounted, not truss-mounted. It attaches to the top of each column and forms its own rigid bar. Your trusses are not carrying any of the lift load, they just have to clear the crossbar height. If your barn has low-slung purlins or fluorescent fixtures at the crossbar height, either the light gets moved or the lift becomes a baseplate. Auto lifts for home garage overhead installs work fine in pole barns as long as you measure to the lowest fixed obstruction, not just to the ridge.

Myth: EVs Need Baseplate Because of the Battery

No connection between the two. EV battery position drives pad placement on the arms, not the choice of overhead or baseplate. What matters for EV work is that the arms reach the OEM lift points cleanly and that the pads sit on the reinforced pinch welds. Both overhead and baseplate configurations use the same arm sets. If an Urbandale EV specialty shop is worried about clearing the battery pack during a lift cycle, that is a pad-height and arm-length question, not a crossbar question. We spec the arms for the vehicle mix in your shop, then the crossbar choice comes down to ceiling clearance and floor cleanliness. Nothing to do with the drivetrain.

Myth: You Can’t Change Your Mind Later

Some lift models come in either configuration from the factory, and a few can be converted after the fact with a kit and a service call. If you are on the fence when you buy auto lifts for home garage use, ask specifically whether the model you like offers a conversion kit. Rotary and Challenger both have conversion options on several two-post families. BendPak varies by model. Atlas typically does not offer field conversion. If flexibility matters to you and your Urbandale shop might expand or reconfigure in the future, buy the model that lets you swap crossbars later. Otherwise, pick based on the ceiling and floor situation you have today, and do not stress about the choice. Both configurations do the daily maintenance job identically once installed.
