Nine out of ten calls we get about auto lifts for home garage installation eventually turn into an electrical conversation. It wouldn’t, and we walked him through why. His story is the same as most weekend mechanics we quote — older house, single-phase panel, a mix of 15-amp and 20-amp circuits, and no dedicated drop for lift-grade equipment. Single-phase vs three-phase basics
Almost every home in Cedar Rapids runs on single-phase 240V power. That’s the standard residential service coming from the utility — two hot legs at 120V each combined for 240V, plus a neutral and ground. Three-phase is what commercial buildings get. It uses three hot legs offset by 120 degrees each and is more efficient for large motors. For auto lifts for home garage use, single-phase is what you need. Every major manufacturer offers single-phase 220V models specifically because home garages don’t have three-phase. When you’re shopping, look for the phrase "220V single-phase" on the spec sheet. Rotary and Challenger both list model suffixes for single-phase and three-phase versions of the same lift — pick the single-phase one for home use. If you accidentally order the three-phase model, you’ll need a phase converter to run it, and that’s an expensive workaround for a mistake that’s avoidable up front.
What your Cedar Rapids garage panel probably has
Most Cedar Rapids garages we look at have a 100-amp or 200-amp main panel in the house, with a garage sub-panel of 60 or 100 amps if the garage is detached. Newer builds often run 200 amps to the garage directly. Older homes might only have one 240V circuit total — usually the dryer. That’s fine for the dryer, but it’s not what you want to share with a lift motor. A two-post lift pulls 20 to 30 amps at startup and about 15 amps under running load. That doesn’t sound like much, but a dryer already on that circuit will pop the breaker every time you start the lift with the dryer running. If your panel is full, an electrician can install a sub-panel or a tandem breaker depending on the code inspector’s preferences.
Amperage draw by lift type
Motor size drives the amp draw. Most 9,000 to 10,000-pound two-post lifts run a 2 or 3 HP motor drawing 15 to 20 amps under load, with startup surge briefly hitting 25 to 30 amps. Four-post lifts with similar capacity tend to run smaller motors (2 HP) because the hydraulic system is doing less work. Scissor lifts sit between the two. Very few home garage lifts require anything more than a 30-amp 220V circuit. If a manufacturer’s spec sheet is asking for 50 amps single-phase on a 10,000-pound lift, something is odd — verify the phase configuration before you order. Underspec is worse — the motor will trip breakers or overheat. Match the circuit to the manufacturer’s stated draw plus 25% margin, per NEC.
Breaker and wire sizing
For a typical 20-amp single-phase 220V lift, you want a 30-amp double-pole breaker (protecting the wire, not the motor — the motor’s overload protection is internal) and 10-gauge copper wire. If the run from the panel to the lift is longer than 50 feet, size up to 8-gauge to avoid voltage drop. Voltage drop is a hidden killer — a lift running on 200V instead of 240V will start slower, run hotter, and cycle-fail sooner. Our Cedar Rapids hobbyist had a 70-foot run from his panel to the far corner of his garage. We had him upsize to 8-gauge just to be safe. It cost him another $60 in wire but avoided any risk of nuisance issues down the road. Cord and receptacle choices
Most home garage lifts ship with either a hardwired connection or a NEMA 6-20 or NEMA 6-30 plug. NEMA 6-20 is a 20-amp 220V plug with two horizontal blades and a ground. NEMA 6-30 is the 30-amp version with a rotated ground. Match the receptacle to the lift’s plug. Do not use a 6-20 plug in a 6-30 receptacle by swapping the plug head — the breaker won’t protect the motor properly. Some hobbyists hardwire the lift to eliminate the plug entirely. That’s fine and technically cleaner, but you lose the ability to disconnect quickly if you ever want to move the lift or service the motor. Where to place the drop
The electrical drop should end at the base of the lift’s power column — not across the shop, not overhead if you can help it. Overhead drops are fine for shop lighting; they’re a nuisance for lift power because the cord has to travel from the ceiling to the column. Most manufacturers show the motor-column location in their install guide. Rotary lifts typically put the motor on the driver’s-side column. Challenger and BendPak vary. Ask the installer or check the spec sheet before your electrician runs the wire. If the drop ends up on the wrong wall, you’ll be running conduit across the ceiling or under the slab — both fixable, both expensive. When to call an electrician vs when to DIY
If your panel has clear labeling, a spare double-pole slot, and less than a 30-foot run to the lift, a confident DIYer can pull the circuit themselves and pass inspection. If your panel is full, if you need a sub-panel, or if the run crosses through walls or under a slab, call an electrician.
