ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) Gold certification means the lift has been tested by an independent third-party lab to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards for load capacity, structural integrity, overload protection, and safety-lock engagement. Uncertified imports can look identical in a photograph and cost a third less. The 30×40 Pole Barn Fit Check
Before he ordered, we drove up and laid a floor tape out where the lift would go. That step matters. A standard 4-post storage lift is around 174 inches long over the ramps and 106 inches wide over the columns. In a 30×40 building you have room to run the lift along the long wall, park a second bay vehicle beside it, and still keep a walkway to the man door. His 12-foot side walls were the real question. Rise height on a two-car storage lift is 82 to 84 inches under the runways when fully raised, which puts the top of a stored SUV around 148 inches off the ground. His trusses gave him 138 inches of clear opening, which meant a full-size van on top was out but any sedan or crossover fit. We showed him this on the floor with masking tape before he wrote the check.
Wheel Bearing Service on a 4-Post Storage Lift
The service he was most worried about was wheel bearing replacement. On a two-post, you get the wheels hanging free and it’s easy. On a 4-post storage lift, the tires sit on the runways, so you have to lift a corner separately. Every quality 4-post lift includes rolling bridge jacks or accepts a standard floor jack in the jack slot cut into the runway. He bought the twin-jack option. With one jack under each rear runway, he can pull both rear wheels together, pack bearings, and reinstall without ever coming back to the ground. For front wheel bearings on transverse FWD hubs, same story. The jacks lift up to 6,000 pounds each and give him about 18 inches of secondary rise on top of the main lift height. Locking Positions and Height Adjustability
One of his sharpest questions was whether the lift was all-the-way-up or all-the-way-down. It’s not. That means you can set the lift at knee height for suspension work, waist height for exhaust, or top-of-column for parking, and the load rests on a mechanical steel lock instead of hydraulic pressure. Iowa Delivery, Installation, and Anchor Work
We delivered on a Wednesday and installed Thursday. Two guys, about five hours. His concrete was a fresh six-inch pour with rebar, so anchor requirements were met without a second thought. Older barn slabs are the trickier case — four inches unreinforced is the manufacturer minimum, and we’ll core-sample if the pour date is unknown. Anchors are 3/4-inch wedge type driven with a rotary hammer to the depth spec on the installation manual. We ran power to the 110-volt pump ourselves, plugged it in, cycled the lift up and down under no-load, then loaded his own truck on it as the first shakedown.
