An RV and trailer service shop in Ankeny bought two auto storage lifts from us last spring, and we checked back in with the owner last week to see how the first year went. This is his honest report card — what worked, what he’d spec differently, and how the lifts changed the way he runs annual state trailer inspections. Why an RV Shop Ordered Storage Lifts Instead of Service Lifts
The owner runs a mixed shop — light-duty trailer inspections, RV chassis work, and occasional passenger-car service for the customers who tow with them. He needed to hold trailers up for undercarriage inspection while the tech worked underneath, but he also needed the flexibility to park a customer motorhome on top while a car got serviced on the floor beside it. Two-post lifts don’t do that. Scissor lifts don’t do that. Auto storage lifts do exactly that. He picked a pair of extended-length 4-post units with 9,000-pound capacity each, which handled his heaviest single-axle trailers and any RV chassis he’d realistically see. The choice paid off inside three months, when a bumper-pull toy hauler came in for an axle service and he had a Silverado already parked on top of the other lift.
Ankeny State Inspection Bay Setup
Iowa doesn’t require annual passenger-car inspections, but the shop does DOT inspections and commercial trailer safety checks. The auto storage lifts made his bay layout more efficient. He runs a two-lift row along the back wall of his Ankeny shop, with 14 feet of clear ceiling. That gave him the ability to full-raise a trailer for wheel-off brake inspection while the tech walked around underneath with a flashlight and torque wrench. Before the storage lifts, he was doing brake inspections on jack stands. Now the trailer goes up in 90 seconds, locks at working height, and stays there for the full 45-minute inspection. Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms — The One Thing He’d Change
This is where he pushed back on his own decision. Auto storage lifts don’t have swing arms — they have runways — but the question of symmetric versus asymmetric shows up in a similar form. Standard 4-post runways are symmetric: the drive-on ramp and the far end are the same, and the vehicle sits centered. Some manufacturers offer offset-cross-tube designs where the vehicle sits forward on the runways to open door swing. He wishes he’d bought the offset version. His techs open truck doors constantly when checking cab-mounted trailer wiring, and the standard 4-post has the cross-tube right where a Silverado front door wants to swing. If we were speccing his shop again today, we’d write in the extended-runway, offset-crossmember version and it would have cost him about 8% more upfront. He’d have paid it happily.
Ceiling Height and Approach Angle
His building has 14 feet of clear ceiling, which is generous, but he still ran into approach-angle issues on lifted diesel pickups. When a customer showed up in a leveled 3/4-ton with 35-inch tires and a tall service body, the driver had to creep across the approach ramps because the bed rail was already 84 inches off the ground. The lift itself was fine — the ceiling was still five feet up — but the exit angle off the far end of the runway grazed a shop light. He rerouted the light. If you’re buying auto storage lifts for an RV or truck-service shop, measure not just the raised height of the storage vehicle but the peak height of the tallest thing you’ll roll onto them. Overhead heaters, plumbing, and light fixtures are the usual first casualties.
Locking, Loading, and the First-Year Wear
After twelve months of daily up-and-down cycles, both lifts still lock cleanly on every ladder position, hydraulic seals show no seepage, and the cables show no fraying at the pulleys. That’s what he expected from ALI Gold auto storage lifts and it’s what he got. The one wear item was the plastic slider blocks at the top of each column, which is a $30 part and a five-minute swap. We replaced those under warranty during his six-month check-in. Cables get inspected annually per manufacturer spec; on these units, we won’t need to touch them for another two years. Yes, with the offset-runway option written in. The 9,000-pound capacity was correct for his mix. The extended length was correct for trailers up to 22 feet. His only regret is arm geometry, which is fixable on the next pair.
