A farm shop owner outside Waukee called us last winter about auto storage lifts. He runs corn and beans on the operation, works on his own equipment, and had just poured a 40×60 pole barn addition with a 14-foot ceiling. Before he wrote a check, we walked him through the checklist we give every rural buyer — the same list we use when we spec our own shop. This article is that checklist. Print it, carry it out to your building with a tape measure, and you’ll come back with every number you need to place an order confidently.

Measure Your Ceiling Height First, Not Last
Every conversation about auto storage lifts starts here. Ceiling height determines the maximum vehicle you can store on top. Take the raised height of the runway (typically 82-84 inches on residential 9K units), add the height of your tallest storage vehicle, and add six inches for a safety gap between the roof rack and the trusses. For a full-size SUV on top and a passenger car underneath, you want a minimum of 12 feet clear ceiling. For a lifted pickup on top, plan for 13 to 14 feet. Our Waukee customer had 14 feet, which meant he could store his SxS or his half-ton on top and still work on his combine components underneath. If you have less than 11 feet of clear, we’ll steer you toward a mid-rise or a two-post instead.
Check the Concrete Before You Order
Manufacturer specs on auto storage lifts require a minimum 4-inch concrete pad at 3,000 PSI or better. Six inches with rebar is standard for a fresh pour and is what we recommend for new builds. If you’re installing in an existing barn slab, we need to know the pour date, the thickness, and whether it was reinforced. For pours older than 20 years or unknown-thickness slabs, we’ll core-sample before we bolt anchors. Our Waukee owner had a fresh 6-inch pour with #4 rebar on 12-inch centers, which is well above minimum. Anchors on a 4-post are typically 3/4-inch wedge type driven into predrilled holes. Cracked, spalled, or heaved concrete disqualifies a location entirely — we’ve walked away from installs where the slab wasn’t sound.
Door Swing and Approach Angle Around the Lift
This is the measurement most buyers forget. When your storage vehicle is up top and you park a work truck underneath, can you open both driver doors? On a standard 4-post the space between columns is about 100 inches, which fits any full-size pickup with about six inches of door swing on each side. But if you’ve got a wall or another lift right next to it, that door-swing math gets tight fast. Our Waukee farmer wanted to park his F-350 dually underneath while working. Dually mirrors extend beyond the columns of most residential auto storage lifts, so we had him spec the wider version. Measure the widest vehicle you’ll ever park underneath — mirror to mirror — and add two feet on each side for door-open clearance.
Oil Pan Gasket Work Under a Storage Lift
The specific job the Waukee owner wanted to do on his auto storage lifts was engine oil pan gasket replacement on his older Ford diesel. That’s a job where you need to raise the engine off its mounts to clear the frame crossmember while the pan drops. On a 4-post lift with the vehicle sitting on its own tires on the runways, you can support the engine from above with a support bar across the frame rails, or use a transmission jack from below with the twin bridge-jack option. He chose the bridge jacks. Now he can crack the pan bolts, lower the pan with the jack, replace the gasket, and reinstall — all without leaving the lift. This is one of the killer applications for auto storage lifts in a farm or rural shop, and it’s the reason bridge jacks are our most-recommended option.
Electrical Circuit for the Hydraulic Pump
Residential auto storage lifts run on a 110-volt single-phase pump, which plugs into any standard 20-amp outlet. Commercial and heavy-capacity units may require 220-volt single-phase, and a few request 3-phase power. Before you order, verify what your building has. A new pole-barn build usually gets 200-amp service with a 220-volt subpanel, which handles anything we’d sell you. An older shed running off a single 30-amp feed may need a service upgrade before the lift will operate reliably. Our Waukee farmer had 200-amp service and a dedicated 20-amp circuit in the corner where the lift went, which was exactly right. Voltage drop from long extension cords is a chronic problem — run permanent wiring or a heavy-gauge shop cord, not a 100-foot extension.
Vehicle Capacity, Wheelbase, and Weight Distribution
Storage-lift capacity ratings are total-vehicle weight, but the rating also assumes reasonable weight distribution. A 9,000-pound rated lift will hold a 9,000-pound sedan fine; it will not necessarily hold an 8,500-pound truck with 6,000 pounds concentrated on the rear axle. Check per-axle limits, not just gross rating. Wheelbase matters too. Standard 4-post storage lifts fit vehicles from about 90-inch wheelbase (a small hatchback) up to about 170-inch (a full-size 3/4-ton crew cab). For anything longer — a dually long-bed or a large motorhome — you’ll need the extended-runway version. The Waukee farmer’s F-350 dually long-bed pushed him to the extended runway, which added a few inches of overall length and about 8% to the price.
