An RV service shop in northeast Iowa asked us to help them compare three different auto storage lifts side by side before they wrote a purchase order. They wanted to run oil changes and general fluid service on top of standard RV chassis work, and they weren’t sure which capacity and configuration made sense. We laid out three spec sheets on their front counter and walked through each one. A year later we came back and checked how the final choice worked out. This article is that spec comparison plus the twelve-month field report.

Model A: The 8,000-Pound Residential Baseline
Model A was the entry-level 8K unit. Standard runway length of about 168 inches, standard 82-inch rise, single 110-volt pump, ALI Gold certified. Base price is the lowest of the three by a meaningful margin. On paper it looked like enough — most passenger vehicles and light trucks come in under 6,500 pounds. In practice, for an RV shop, the 8K left no safety margin. A Class B motorhome on a Sprinter chassis runs 8,500 to 9,500 pounds with full water and fuel. The 8K lift wouldn’t have handled it. We walked the owner past this model on the first pass. If you’re strictly a passenger-car home shop, the 8K auto storage lifts are a fine choice. For any commercial or RV application, skip past.
Model B: The 9,000-Pound Extended-Runway Workhorse
Model B was our recommended middle option. 9,000-pound capacity, extended runway to about 191 inches, standard 82-inch rise, 110-volt pump, ALI Gold certified. This is the model that fits about 80% of the shop and home applications we quote. The extended runway handles crew-cab long-beds and shorter Class B motorhomes. Capacity handles anything in the passenger and light-commercial range. The shop owner picked this one for one bay. It has now cycled about 1,100 times in twelve months of RV oil-change and fluid work, and shows zero maintenance issues beyond the routine annual sheave lube. For most auto storage lifts buyers, Model B is the answer and you can stop shopping.
Model C: The 10,000-Pound Heavy Storage Option
Model C bumped up to 10,000-pound capacity and 220-volt pump, with the same extended runway and rise as Model B. On paper, the extra 1,000 pounds of capacity for only about 12% more dollars looked attractive. In practice, the 220-volt pump requires a dedicated 220V circuit at the install location, which this shop’s older building didn’t have. Adding the circuit would have cost him a few hundred more in electrician time. Also, the 10K only made sense if he was regularly parking or servicing something over 9,000 pounds — and the truth is, once a month at most. We steered him back to Model B for the primary bay. For his second bay, where he sometimes lifts a heavier Class C motorhome chassis, we spec’d Model C.
Oil Change Workflow on the 9K Storage Lift
The specific workflow question the owner had was RV oil changes. Class B and Class C RVs on Ford or Mercedes chassis have low ground clearance and long wheelbases; the drain plug and filter live where a floor jack can’t easily reach. The auto storage lifts fixed this. He drives the RV onto the extended runway, raises to shoulder height, locks, and his tech walks under with a drain pan and filter wrench. Complete oil change including chassis lube runs about 25 minutes per RV, versus about 45 minutes on the floor with jack stands. Multiply that time savings across his winterization season, and the lift paid for a large chunk of itself in labor efficiency in year one.
Fluid Service — Transmission, Coolant, and Differential
Beyond oil changes, the shop uses both auto storage lifts for full fluid-service packages: transmission drain-and-fills, coolant flushes, and rear differential fluid changes. Transmission service on a Sprinter requires access to the pan bolts and a fluid level check with the engine warm. On the storage lift, both operations happen at working height with the vehicle level and stable. Coolant flushes benefit from the lift because the low drain point on modern chassis often sits behind a splash shield that requires access from below. The Waukee owner’s Model B lift is essentially a heavy-duty full-service platform once you add the twin bridge jacks. He didn’t add them at purchase, but he’s added them since — and it took us an afternoon to install.
Cable Wear and Cycle Life at Twelve Months
At the twelve-month inspection, we pulled the covers off both auto storage lifts and inspected cables, sheaves, hydraulic connections, and safety-lock engagement. Cables showed normal wear — no broken strands, no fraying, no elongation beyond spec. Sheaves were properly greased at the six-month re-lube we did in the summer. Safety-lock pawls engaged crisply on all four columns of both lifts. Total shop investment in year-one maintenance was under $200 in grease, filters, and shop rags. That’s the maintenance profile you should expect from ALI Gold certified 4-post auto storage lifts running in a light commercial environment. If your lift is doing worse, something’s wrong; call us.
What He’d Buy Again and What He’d Change
He’d buy the same two lifts again — Model B for the primary bay and Model C for the heavier work. What he’d change is he’d order the twin bridge jacks up front instead of adding them later.
