Auto Storage Lifts for a Western Illinois Mobile Mechanic: An Install Case Study

Alignment Machine For Sale Boca Raton, FL

Contact Us

A mobile mechanic operating out of western Illinois called us about auto storage lifts for a new permanent shop he was building outside the Quad Cities. We regularly deliver over the state line from our Ames warehouse, so distance wasn’t an obstacle. His question was more about which brand to buy, why one storage-lift brand costs 40% more than another that looks identical on a website, and whether the extra money was worth it for a one-tech mobile-plus-shop operation. This is that case study. Same primary problem as an Iowa install — different geography, different brand-history conversation, same delivered result.

Why He Called an Iowa Company Instead of an Illinois One

He’d shopped locally and gotten three quotes on auto storage lifts, all for imports we don’t recognize by brand name. The prices were low, the delivery promises were fast, and the salespeople couldn’t answer his questions about ALI Gold certification. He asked around and got our number from an old customer of ours who’d bought a Rotary two-post from us six years earlier. The point is not that Iowa is closer than Illinois — it’s that a real installer with a real parts pipeline is worth 45 minutes of extra drive time over a website that ships boxes. We took his call, quoted BendPak and Atlas residential-grade lifts, and shipped over the state line on the same freight schedule we’d use for a Cedar Rapids delivery.

Brand History — Why BendPak Is Different From an Import

BendPak has been building auto storage lifts since the mid-1980s. The current 4-post product line is the fifth or sixth generation of a design that’s been iterated for four decades. Column steel gauge, cable geometry, sheave bearings, safety-latch springs — every one of those pieces has been through multiple field-failure investigations and been re-engineered in response. An import that looks identical in a marketplace listing has almost none of that engineering history. It might be a copy of a fifteen-year-old BendPak design that’s since been superseded. When you buy BendPak, you’re buying the current generation. When you buy the import, you’re often buying a copy of something that BendPak stopped selling for a reason. We explained this to the Illinois customer and he understood immediately.

Wheel Bearing Service — Why He Bought the Lift

His main revenue stream as a mobile mechanic was wheel bearing service on light trucks and SUVs. That’s a job with a lot of torque involved — the hub nut runs 200 ft-lb, the caliper bolts are 100 ft-lb, and you need to spin the rotor freely to check runout. On his old floor-jack-and-stands setup, he was fighting the vehicle every time. On auto storage lifts with bridge jacks, the truck sits on the runways, he raises the bridge jack under the front axle, unloads that wheel, and services it with the vehicle stable on eight anchor points instead of four. Cycle time on a front wheel bearing R&R dropped from about 90 minutes to about 55. Multiplied across his projected volume, the lift paid for itself in year one.

Parts Pipeline From Ames to Western Illinois

Our warehouse in Ames stocks common wear items for every ALI Gold auto storage lift brand we sell — cables, sheaves, safety-latch springs, hydraulic seals, ladder pawls, drive-on ramp hinges. When the Illinois customer eventually needs any of these, he calls us at 800-674-9302, we pull it off the shelf, and it ships next-day UPS across the state line. Total lead time from phone call to part-in-hand is typically 48 hours. That’s a service pipeline he could not have gotten from a shipping-only online reseller and it’s the reason he chose us despite the geography. The pipeline is a real, physical warehouse in Iowa, staffed by real people who know which part matches which lift generation.

Delivery Logistics — Iowa to the Quad Cities

Freight from our Ames warehouse to his western Illinois shop is about a 4-hour drive one-way. We loaded the lift on our own trailer, crossed the state line on a Wednesday morning, and were unloading in his shop by noon. Total delivery cost was in line with a standard Iowa in-state delivery, because our regional freight schedule already runs across the Mississippi twice a week. If you’re located within 5 hours of Ames — anywhere in Iowa, most of Illinois, western Wisconsin, Missouri, southern Minnesota, or eastern Nebraska — we can deliver auto storage lifts at Iowa in-state rates. Longer distances still work, we just add freight cost. Get a quote by phone before you assume freight will kill the deal.

Installation on an Older Illinois Slab

His shop concrete was original from the building’s 1970s construction — we had no pour records and no reinforcement documentation. We core-drilled two test samples on install morning, confirmed the slab was 5 inches thick with adequate strength, and proceeded with 3/4-inch wedge anchors at manufacturer torque. Older slabs are a common situation and they’re usually fine, but we don’t guess. If your slab is old or unknown, tell us upfront and we’ll bring the core-drill setup. Bad concrete is the number-one preventable install failure on auto storage lifts, and it’s fully preventable if the installer takes 20 minutes to check before drilling anchor holes.

What He Paid and What You’d Pay

Total delivered-and-installed cost for a BendPak 9K auto storage lift, bridge jacks, drip trays, freight across the state line, and turnkey install came in at the low five figures. Call 800-674-9302 for your specific number against your specific configuration. Residential-grade units come in lower, commercial and heavier-capacity units come in higher. Any of them beat the cost of building a bigger shop just to fit two vehicles side by side. Read our mobile mechanic shop setup guide and BendPak vs Atlas comparison before you decide, then call us to spec it out.
