A heavy-duty truck shop owner north of Cedar Rapids called us last winter about building out a real autolift garage for medium-duty step vans, box trucks, and the occasional Class 6 chassis rolling through his door. He had been on creepers for fifteen years and his back was done. Exhaust hangers rusted through, driveline U-joints wearing out, brake service on 26-foot vans that would not fit his neighbor’s shop. He needed real height, real reach, and a cost sheet he could take to his banker. Here is how we broke it down for him bay by bay.

What a medium-duty autolift garage actually needs
Medium-duty truck work changes the equation quickly. A passenger-car 10,000 lb two-post will not touch a fully loaded step van coming in at 14,000 lb curb weight. You start looking at 15,000, 18,000, or 30,000 lb capacity, and the arm geometry has to reach past longer wheelbases. The Cedar Rapids owner ended up with two lift bays for his autolift garage: one 18,000 lb symmetric for box-van chassis, and one mobile column set for the tandem-axle straight trucks he had been sending to a friend’s shop. Exhaust access on a 26-foot box van needs the truck sitting high enough that you are not stooped over a drive shaft. Driveline work, pulling a two-piece shaft or changing carrier bearings, wants at least 72 inches of daylight under the frame. That drove the ceiling math and the column height, and it is where a lot of first-time buyers under-buy the lift. We told him honestly: buy the capacity you will grow into over five years, not the capacity that matches last month’s ticket mix.
Real cost breakdown: lift, freight, install, electrical
For a mid-range 18,000 lb symmetric two-post, the lift itself lands in the mid-teens to low twenties depending on brand, warranty, and dual-hydraulic versus single. Freight from the manufacturer to Cedar Rapids adds a low four-figure line; box-truck deliveries with lift gates cost more than commercial dock-to-dock freight. Install runs in a similar range depending on whether we are coring existing slab or working with a fresh pour. Electrical is the line owners forget: single-phase 208-230V is common on lower-capacity lifts, but 18K and up often want three-phase 460V. If your building does not have three-phase you are paying a licensed electrician to bring it in. Add commissioning, safety-lock check, and the annual ALI inspection contract and you have a real number. Numbers change month to month but the categories do not, which is why we quote them separately.
Ceiling and floor requirements before you sign a PO
Before signing the purchase order on any lift we walk the building. Ceiling height controls what you can buy. An 18,000 lb symmetric with overhead cross-tube typically needs 14 to 16 feet of clear column, and if you have 12-foot side walls on a pole barn the overhead configuration is off the table. Baseplate or floor-plate models solve the ceiling problem but they run cables and hoses across the floor between the columns, which changes how you drive in and out. Slab requirements are non-negotiable. Most commercial two-post lifts want 4.25 inches minimum of 3,000 PSI concrete for the anchor pattern, and pole-barn slabs poured to residential spec often come in at 4 inches with lower PSI. We core-sample every questionable slab before we quote install. The Cedar Rapids shop had a 6-inch slab from a previous truck-repair tenant and we still verified rebar spacing and edge distance before committing. Cracks within 12 inches of a proposed anchor location mean we are moving the layout or cutting and re-pouring. Having that decision in writing before the lift ships saves everyone the argument later.
Two-post versus mobile column for exhaust and driveline access
Two-post and mobile column both work for medium-duty truck exhaust and driveline work but they solve different problems. Two-post is fixed, fast, and cheaper per bay. You pull in, throw the arms under the frame rails, and you are up. It works for box vans, single-axle straight trucks, and step vans up to their rated capacity. Mobile column really shines when the chassis is longer than a fixed lift’s clear floor, when you need to lift by wheel rather than frame, or when you want to service a tandem-axle straight truck. Wheel-lift is faster on trucks where finding proper frame pickup points is a fight; the columns clamp on the tires and you are going up in under two minutes. In his autolift garage the two-post handles about 80% of the work at half the cost of a column set, and we specified a used four-column mobile set for the tandem-axle work. That mixed layout is the sweet spot for a lot of Iowa truck shops. He also runs a portable transmission jack under both lifts because driveline drops are half his ticket volume.
What installation day looks like in Cedar Rapids
Install day on a two-bay buildout typically runs two full days for a two-person crew, three if the electrician comes on day two. We arrive at 7 AM with the lift already on site from the freight drop the week prior. Day one is uncrate, position, mark anchor pattern, drill anchors, set columns, plumb them, torque to specification, run hoses, fill and bleed hydraulics, and verify safety locks in every position. Day two is cycle under load, verify locks under weight, adjust arm restraints, and walk the owner through daily and monthly maintenance. The Cedar Rapids owner joined us for the whole second day, which we recommend for any first-time buyer. He learned where the grease points were, how to check cable stretch on a four-post if he added one later, and what a healthy hydraulic seal weep looks like versus a failing one. Weather matters. We do not drill anchors into below-freezing concrete because the shock loads chip the aggregate. His pole-barn heat let us work through the day even in February, so we scheduled around the forecast.
Cable, hose, and pad replacement over ten years
The other side of the autolift garage cost picture is what the lift costs you after year one. Two-post lifts do not have cables the way four-posts do, but they do have hydraulic hoses that fatigue, pad adapters that wear, arm restraints that need re-shimming, and safety-lock components that seize if they are not exercised. Plan on a hose set at year five to eight depending on duty cycle and whether it is a synthetic-oil-friendly build. Pad adapters (the rubber pucks and stackable extensions) get replaced every one to three years in a working truck shop; they take an absolute beating on frame-lift pickup points. Safety locks need to be exercised weekly and inspected annually per ALI standards. Four-post equivalents add cables at the seven to ten-year mark. Cylinders on a well-maintained lift will run twenty years, but if you let hydraulic fluid contamination sit, seals go early. That is why we push filter changes with fluid changes. Ten-year maintenance on a commercial two-post usually lands at 15% to 25% of acquisition cost depending on duty and how honest the shop is about upkeep. Keeping the autolift garage layout flexible
Flexibility means designing the bay for the next lift you will add, not just the one you are installing today. In Cedar Rapids that meant leaving room between the two-post columns and the north wall so a mobile column pair could swing around a tandem-axle chassis. It meant running compressed air drops on the ceiling on both sides so a future scissor lift could sit anywhere along a 30-foot bay. It meant putting the electrical panel where a three-phase feed could extend across the whole shop, not just to lift number one. Waste-oil, coolant recovery, and antifreeze drums get their own corner with wall-hung dispensers, because retrofitting fluid handling later costs more than doing it right up front. Floor drains sloped to a trench matter more than most owners realize until they are standing in a puddle from a coolant flush.
