The safety question that comes first
Every autolift garage design decision starts with tech safety. In a two-post lift, the difference between an overhead configuration (crossbar and cables running above the columns) and a baseplate configuration (crossbar and cables running across the floor between the columns) is where the mechanical linkage lives. Overhead keeps the floor clean; baseplate keeps the ceiling clean. Both are ALI-certified when properly installed. What OSHA cares about is trip hazards, guarding, and safe operating clearance. A baseplate lift with a floor crossbar creates a trip line between the two columns; techs walking a driveshaft between the wheels catch it eventually. In a busy northeast Iowa tire shop that pushes 40 vehicles a day that trip line becomes a work-comp claim. Overhead avoids that entirely — but only if you have the ceiling. Trade one hazard for another and pick the one your shop’s workflow can actually manage day in and day out.
Overhead: when it wins
Overhead autolift garage two-posts (Rotary SPOA10, Challenger CL10, both standard-height variants) need 12 to 12.5 feet of clear ceiling to install. The crossbar sits at the top of the columns, cables run through sheaves at each corner, and the floor between columns is completely clear. For a tire-and-alignment shop that rolls a Coats tire changer, balancer, and alignment rack in and out of the bay, that clean floor is worth real money. Exhaust and driveline work particularly benefits — a driveshaft is 4 to 7 feet long and the tech carries it between the wheels to the driveline hoist. Any crossbar on the floor means the driveshaft gets lifted over. Overhead is our default recommendation whenever the ceiling supports it. In northeast Iowa most 1990-and-newer commercial buildings meet the ceiling spec; older buildings do not, and that is where the baseplate discussion actually starts.
Baseplate: when it’s the right call
When the ceiling does not clear 12 feet — common in older northeast Iowa shops with 10 to 11 feet — the baseplate autolift garage two-post is the pragmatic choice. Rotary SPOA10-BP and Challenger CL10-BP are the direct low-ceiling versions. The crossbar sits at floor level with ramp guards over the top so it is not a raw trip hazard, but the interruption is still there. For shops that do not roll heavy equipment between the columns and do not do a lot of long-shaft driveline work, baseplate is fine. Tire work is fine (the tire changer stays outside the columns). Alignment work is fine (the alignment rack sits outside). Where it hurts is exhaust and driveline access, where techs are walking long parts between the columns constantly. Baseplate is the compromise, and shops that pick it should train techs on the crossbar at every hire and every safety refresher.
Exhaust and driveline access on both configurations
Exhaust systems on modern trucks and SUVs are 15 to 18 feet from cat back to muffler and often come out in one or two long assemblies. On an autolift garage two-post, the tech drops the hangers, lowers the exhaust, and walks it out from between the columns. On an overhead lift that walk is unobstructed. On a baseplate, the tech steps over the crossbar carrying 40 pounds of steel exhaust — awkward but doable. Driveline work is similar. A one-piece driveshaft on a 4×4 pickup is 6 feet of steel, U-joints on both ends, and heavier than most techs expect. Baseplate crossbars force a hand-off or an over-the-bar lift. In a shop that does daily driveline work (transfer case seals, U-joint replacement, driveshaft balancing), overhead pays for the ceiling every day. Cable inspection and equalization — where both configurations converge
Whether you go overhead or baseplate, an autolift garage two-post uses equalization cables to keep the two carriages rising at the same rate. Those cables need inspection at 90 days, annual documented ALI inspection, and preventive replacement at three to five years in a high-cycle shop. In an overhead configuration cables run through sheaves at the top of each column and across the crossbar; failure modes are sheave wear, cable strand breaks near the pulleys, and stretch. In a baseplate configuration cables run through sheaves at the bottom of each column and across the floor crossbar; failure modes are the same plus corrosion from floor contamination (oil, water, salt in winter). Baseplate cables actually tend to fail sooner in a northeast Iowa shop because winter road brine drags in on customer tires. Budget the maintenance schedule accordingly, and swap cables preventively rather than reactively.
Anchoring differences and slab requirements
Overhead and baseplate autolift garage two-posts have the same 3/4-inch anchor bolt spec at each column base and the same 4-inch, 3,000-psi minimum slab requirement. The difference is what happens if the slab is thin. On an overhead lift each column stands independently; a thin slab under one column can be poured-pad-fixed without touching the other. On a baseplate the crossbar rigidly links the two columns, so any slab work under one column has to account for the other end of the crossbar too. In practice we usually pour pads under both columns simultaneously on a baseplate install. Northeast Iowa buildings with older 3-inch slabs turn into six-to-a-thousand of extra slab work per baseplate lift; overhead lifts on the same building cost about the same because both columns need pads anyway. The cost difference between configurations is more about the lift and cables than the anchoring.
