A small delivery fleet operator in Council Bluffs asked us to help him decide between two autolift garage configurations for his shop: one bay with a single heavy 2-post lift, or two bays with a pair of mid-capacity 2-posts. His trucks are class-3 cargo vans and he does his own suspension and shock work in-house. Same footprint, same budget range, very different daily experience. We ran the numbers with him, walked through the warranty implications of each brand he was considering, and helped him land on a call. Configuration A: one 15,000-pound 2-post
The first autolift garage layout puts a single 15,000-pound capacity 2-post in the middle bay of a three-bay shop. This is what fleet shops with heavy vans and light-duty trucks typically buy. A 15K 2-post handles cargo vans loaded and unloaded, dually pickups, and box trucks up to a certain wheelbase. The upside is capacity headroom. You are never asking the lift to work near its rated maximum, and the wear rate on the arms, cables, and hydraulic system is lower. The downside is throughput. When one van is on the lift for a shock replacement, the other three are on the ground waiting. For a two-technician shop that only lifts one vehicle at a time, this is fine. For a fleet that runs two techs and wants to work on two vehicles at once, this bottlenecks. Our Council Bluffs operator runs a single tech most days. Configuration A was on the table for that reason.
Configuration B: two 10,000-pound 2-posts
The second autolift garage layout puts two 10,000-pound 2-posts in two adjacent bays, each in its own dedicated space with anchor patterns spaced for cargo van wheelbases. Ten thousand pounds is the working capacity for typical class-3 cargo vans loaded to gross weight, with margin. Two lifts means two vehicles up at once. For a shop that occasionally has one tech and occasionally has a second brought in during peak season, this doubles peak throughput without doubling floor space. The tradeoff is capacity. You cannot put a heavier duty truck on a 10K lift when a job comes in that needs it. If the operator’s fleet mix ever grows toward heavier vehicles, the 10K pair becomes a limiter. For his current fleet of class-3 vans and one pickup, the pair fits without stress. He would not be running near the rated limit day-to-day.
Suspension and shock work: which layout wins
The reason he was making this decision now was suspension work. Shock replacements on a cargo van are a common maintenance line, and the difference between doing that job on a 2-post versus a 4-post is significant. A 2-post autolift garage lets you drop the wheels, which is what you need for shock work, control arm work, and anything involving unloaded suspension geometry. Either configuration handles this. The question is whether you want to do one at a time or two at a time. He runs an average of 14 shock replacements a year across the fleet, and roughly a third of those cluster in a two-week window each spring after winter roads chew up the ride. Configuration B lets him and a second hand knock out that spring cluster in half the time. Configuration A stretches it into a longer stretch of scheduled downtime.
Warranty coverage: read the fine print
Both Rotary and Challenger, the two commercial brands we sell into an autolift garage of this scale, offer strong warranty coverage on their 2-post lines. Structural warranty on the columns runs long. Hydraulic system warranty is shorter, and the electrical components are shorter still. What the brochure does not say is that warranty claim workflow depends on your installer. If your lift is installed by a certified installer, most claims are handled by that installer directly with the manufacturer. If you self-install, you file with the manufacturer and the process takes longer. We install everything we sell into western Iowa, so warranty claims funnel through us. That matters most on Configuration B, where you have two lifts, twice the surface area for something to eventually need attention. We told the operator: whichever config you pick, do not self-install if your business depends on the lift being up.
Anchor patterns and slab load: side by side
For an autolift garage in Council Bluffs the slab is usually built by a local concrete contractor who is happy to pour whatever you spec. Configuration A concentrates a single anchor pattern in one bay and needs a 6-inch reinforced pad in that footprint. Configuration B spreads two anchor patterns across two bays, each needing the same 6-inch reinforced pad in its own footprint. Total concrete volume is close between the two, so cost is close. The install labor is different. A single lift install runs one day. Two lift installs run one and a half to two days depending on layout and whether we can stage both at once. If you are pouring new slab specifically for this project, do both pads at once whether you are ordering one lift or two. Adding the second pad later costs more than pouring it up front.
The math on downtime
He asked us to help him put dollars on the throughput question. We do not quote exact dollars for a fleet’s downtime because every fleet is different, but we walked the ratio. If a shock replacement takes 90 minutes on a 2-post lift and a van generates delivery revenue per day, then two lifts running in parallel during his spring cluster saves him roughly half a day of downtime per van compared to sequential. Across the fleet, that adds up to real days per year of avoided downtime. Configuration B pays for the second lift in a couple of spring seasons if the fleet stays busy. Configuration A saves the second lift’s cost up front and never comes with parallel-work capability. His call, once we ran that ratio together, was Configuration B. Two 10K 2-posts, two anchor patterns, spring is coming.
What we would recommend if the fleet mix might change
If his fleet mix included any real chance of adding heavier trucks, we would have pushed him toward Configuration A. Once you commit an autolift garage to two 10K lifts, adding a heavy lift later means giving up a bay and reworking the anchors. Once you commit to a single 15K lift, adding a second lift later is straightforward because the second pad can be poured with room for whatever capacity you eventually need. The rule we give fleet operators: buy for the fleet you will run in five years, not the fleet you run today. His answer was that class-3 cargo vans are the entire business and always will be.
