Last fall we installed an autolift garage for an off-road and overlanding builder in West Des Moines who works on his own vehicles and takes in small jobs for friends. His main rig is a lifted mid-size 4×4 with an oversized tire package, and he needed a lift that handled that vehicle at working height with room for differential fluid service and axle work. The interesting part was not the lift itself. It was the electrical planning we had to do because his detached shop had only a single 60-amp subpanel and no clear path to add capacity without a utility call. Here is how we worked through it.

The vehicle: a lifted 4×4 with oversized tires

The overlander’s daily driver is a mid-size 4×4 pickup with a 3-inch suspension lift, aftermarket bumpers, and 35-inch tires. Loaded curb weight sits well above the stock spec, and the wheelbase is longer than a stock version because of the bumper additions. For an autolift garage that has to service this vehicle, we needed to specify enough capacity to handle the loaded weight comfortably plus enough arm reach to catch the frame at the manufacturer’s designated lift points, not the aftermarket bumpers. We landed on a 10,000-pound 2-post with extended-reach front arms. Nine-K would have been tight on capacity margin. Twelve-K would have been overkill. The tire size drove the arm-reach decision because the wheels sit farther outboard than they would on a stock version, and the arms had to swing wide enough to clear them.

Electrical audit: what we found

Before we ever quoted the lift we did an electrical walk-through of his detached shop. The building had a 60-amp subpanel fed from his main house panel via an underground run. On that subpanel he was already running LED shop lights, an air compressor on a dedicated 240-volt 20-amp circuit, and a mig welder plugged into a 240-volt 40-amp outlet. Adding a 2-post autolift garage lift with a typical 220-volt single-phase 30-amp requirement would have put him at or near his subpanel’s rated capacity depending on simultaneous loads. That is not automatically a problem, because you never run the welder and the lift at the same time, but it is a problem if the electrical inspector considers the total connected load rather than the calculated demand. We had to sort that out before he signed the lift order.

The single-phase vs three-phase question

For a home or small-shop autolift garage in the West Des Moines area, single-phase 220 is what you plan around. Three-phase power costs the utility real money to bring to a residential-adjacent site, and unless you are in an industrial park it usually is not available at all. His shop was on a residential utility feed. Three-phase was off the table. Every 2-post lift we sell into a home-shop context is spec’d for single-phase, so this is not a real constraint for the buyer. The reason we ask about phase in every quote is that the answer determines which motor we ship with the lift. Ship a three-phase motor to a single-phase site and you have a paperweight until you order the replacement. We confirm the phase in writing before every autolift garage order and we call again to confirm before the freight leaves.

The upgrade path we recommended

Rather than swap his subpanel, which would have meant permitting and inspection, we recommended a dedicated 240-volt 30-amp circuit off the existing subpanel with a load-shedding interlock relative to the welder circuit. What that means in plain English: he can run the lift or the welder, but not both simultaneously. The interlock is a small device that lives in the subpanel and prevents both circuits from being live at once. Total connected load on paper stayed within limits. In practice he never runs the welder while the lift is up anyway. This kept the electrical cost of his autolift garage in the low hundreds instead of the mid thousands that a full subpanel upgrade would have run. It also kept the project moving without a utility call. His electrician sourced the interlock locally.

Grounding, disconnects, and the little details

Every 2-post autolift garage installation we do gets a lockable disconnect switch within sight of the lift itself. Code varies by jurisdiction, but the rule we follow is: if you cannot see the disconnect from the operator control station, we add one where you can. His electrician installed a fused disconnect on the wall next to the lift’s power unit, wired the lift through it, and grounded the whole assembly to the shop’s grounding electrode. This is not glamorous work, but it is what makes the difference between a lift that stays safe during a lightning storm and a lift that becomes an insurance conversation. We do not do the electrical ourselves. We spec what needs to be done and we coordinate with your electrician. If you do not have one, we can refer someone local who has installed lifts before.

Install day and the first cycle test

Install day for his autolift garage ran a full day. His slab was a 6-inch pour done for exactly this project, and it was flat and dry. We set the columns, anchored ten wedge bolts, torqued to spec, and connected the hydraulic hoses. His electrician came out the same afternoon to run the final power connection and pull permits. We ran three empty cycles to bleed the hydraulic system, then brought his 4×4 in for the first loaded cycle. The arms caught the frame at the manufacturer’s lift points cleanly, the lift raised to full height with no unusual noise, and the safety locks engaged at every station on the way up. That first loaded cycle is what tells you the install went well. If you hear a chatter or feel a hitch, we stop and troubleshoot before we hand the lift over. His went smoothly.

What he does with it now, six months in

Six months later he is doing his own differential fluid service, wheel bearing repacks, and light suspension work in the shop. He has also taken in a couple of paid jobs for other overlanders in the West Des Moines area who wanted specific service done on their own rigs. His autolift garage has effectively become a side business that runs on evenings and weekends. He is not a commercial shop and does not want to be. But the lift has paid for a meaningful percentage of itself already in avoided shop bills and side work. If you are considering a similar build and your primary use case is your own vehicles with occasional friends-and-neighbors work, this is the pattern most owners fall into. It works when the lift is sized correctly and the electrical is planned before you buy.
