Autolift Garage Freight Myths: What a Dubuque EV Shop Learned the Hard Way

An EV specialty shop owner in Dubuque called us six months after he had already bought and taken delivery of an autolift garage lift from another supplier. The lift itself was fine. The freight and unloading experience had been a disaster, and he wanted a second opinion before he bought his second lift. What he described is a pattern we hear often enough that it is worth writing up as a common-mistake piece. If you are buying your first commercial lift and you have never dealt with LTL freight before, read this before you sign anything.

Myth one: the freight driver will help unload

The single biggest myth we hear from first-time autolift garage buyers is that the freight driver will help unload the lift. Freight drivers do not help unload. Their contract with the freight carrier ends at the trailer gate. They open the doors, they lower the liftgate if you paid for one, and they wait. That is the job. If you do not have your own forklift, pallet jack, or unloading crew, the lift sits on the liftgate until you find one. Our Dubuque EV shop owner discovered this at 10 AM on a Tuesday when a 53-foot trailer showed up with an 800-pound columns pallet and he had no way to get it off. He rented a forklift for four hours from a local rental company at retail price. The rental cost more than the freight surcharge for skid-to-shop delivery would have.

Myth two: your dock will fit the trailer

The second freight myth for an autolift garage delivery is that any trailer can back into any dock. Not true. Standard LTL freight trailers are 53 feet long and need a straight approach of at least 60 feet in a paved area. If your shop is on a corner lot or fronts directly onto a two-lane road, the truck cannot back in without blocking traffic. Our Dubuque client was on a busy street with a shared parking lot, and the driver simply refused to back in. Instead the freight got dropped in the shared lot and the client had to move it 40 feet with a pallet jack over uneven asphalt. That is where the columns took cosmetic damage. Everything worked in the end, but the finish on one column is scuffed in a way it would not have been if the freight had reached the shop door on a smaller truck.

Myth three: a residential-style liftgate is enough

The third autolift garage freight myth is that a residential liftgate handles a commercial lift. It does not. Standard residential liftgates are rated for a few hundred pounds. A palletized 2-post lift column weighs 800 pounds or more per pallet, and some 4-post lifts ship on pallets that push toward 1,000. Commercial liftgates rated for that weight cost more and are not standard equipment on every freight carrier. You have to ask for one specifically. If you order without specifying and the driver arrives with a residential-rated liftgate, the freight either does not come off or comes off at your own risk. We spec commercial liftgates on every autolift garage delivery we quote. Verify this with your supplier before the truck rolls, in writing on the freight paperwork. Do not take a phone assurance.

Myth four: the forklift you already have is big enough

Some buyers assume that because they have a warehouse forklift, they can handle any autolift garage freight. It depends on the forklift and the pallet. A 3,000-pound-rated forklift with 42-inch forks handles most palletized lift components fine. A smaller electric warehouse lift with 36-inch forks may not fit under a wider pallet or may not have the reach to lift the load safely. Our Dubuque client had a 2,500-pound electric lift he used inside the shop, and it turned out to be adequate for the columns but marginal on the arms. If you are unsure whether your forklift is rated for the job, tell us the model when we quote, and we can confirm before freight leaves. This is a five-minute conversation that avoids a rough Tuesday.

Myth five: unloading is a one-person job

Unloading an autolift garage delivery is a two-person job even with a forklift. One person spots the pallet on the fork tips and calls out clearance from the trailer walls. The other person operates the forklift. Trying to do it alone means either scraping the trailer walls or scraping the pallet, and either can cost you a fresh chunk of powder coat. Our Dubuque client tried to unload alone. His son-in-law showed up 40 minutes into the process to help finish. If you are the only person at your shop on delivery day, reschedule. Or pay for skid-to-shop delivery from a freight service that unloads for you, which is available in most Iowa cities including Dubuque for a modest add-on. Do not try to hero the unload solo. It costs more than it saves.

How we prevent all of this on our installs

When you buy an autolift garage lift through us, freight and unloading are part of the quote, not an afterthought. We ask about your dock or unloading area on the first phone call. We spec commercial liftgate service by default. For customers without their own forklift, we offer white-glove delivery with our own crew and equipment for a flat fee that scales by distance. For Dubuque and the eastern-Iowa corridor we can send our install crew with a forklift on the truck, unload on-site, and start the install the same day. The Dubuque EV shop owner ordered his second lift through us with white-glove delivery. It arrived on a Monday, was on his slab by lunch, and was operational by end of day. The first lift took him three weeks of scheduling headaches. This one took a day.

The one thing to ask before you order

If you take one thing away from this piece it is this: before you buy any autolift garage lift, ask the supplier in writing exactly what is included in freight. Get the trailer size, the liftgate rating, the delivery point (dock, curb, or shop floor), and any exclusions. If they cannot answer clearly, that is your signal to keep shopping. Freight is not the exciting part of a lift purchase, but it is the part where a smooth-sounding sales quote can turn into a very rough delivery day. We would rather quote you higher and deliver on the promise than quote you lower and leave you renting a forklift on a Tuesday morning. Ask your supplier to spell it out, or call us and we will spell it out for you first.
