A tire and alignment shop owner in Urbandale asked us to walk his new building’s blueprints before he committed to an autolift garage layout. He was doing a lot of wheel bearing service and wanted a lift that let him get to every corner of a passenger vehicle without contorting. What he really needed was a safety walkthrough of the physical space itself, because the ceiling clearance and the overhead door swing were both going to interact with the lift in ways he had not thought through. This piece is that walkthrough, written as a safety-first checklist for anyone planning a similar shop.

Ceiling clearance: measure to the lowest point
The most common autolift garage safety mistake we see on shop blueprints is a ceiling measurement taken to the highest point of the roof rather than the lowest. A shop with 14-foot sidewalls and a scissor truss might only have 11 feet of clear working height at the truss line, and if a lift raises a vehicle over that truss, you have a collision. For our Urbandale client’s shop, we measured to the lowest fixed obstruction, which was a bottom chord of a truss that dropped 20 inches below the roof deck. Actual working clearance in his center bay was 12 feet 4 inches. That let him spec a standard 2-post autolift garage lift with room for a mid-height SUV overhead, but it ruled out taller trucks. Always measure to the lowest fixed point, not the highest, and label it clearly on your blueprint before you shop for a lift.
Overhead door swing: the second dimension that matters
An overhead door does not swing outward, but it swings upward into the ceiling on tracks that eat interior height as they retract. In an autolift garage bay, this matters because you cannot raise a vehicle on the lift while the door is opening or closing without risking contact. Our Urbandale client’s overhead door was 12 feet wide and retracted into a track that ate 18 inches of ceiling height in the first 8 feet back from the door. That created a wedge-shaped no-lift zone that his floor plan had to accommodate. We staged the lift 10 feet back from the door line, which cleared the door swing entirely with margin. If you are laying out an autolift garage on paper, mark the door swing envelope in a distinct color, and do not place the lift’s overhead reach inside that envelope. Not once. Not for a small vehicle. Never.
The safety pins and locks nobody explains
Every 2-post and 4-post autolift garage lift has mechanical safety locks in addition to the hydraulic system. These are physical steel pins or pawls that engage at set intervals as the lift raises, and they are what hold the vehicle at height if the hydraulic system fails. The rule for using them is: raise the lift to your working height, then lower it slightly onto the nearest safety lock so the load rests on steel, not oil. Our Urbandale client had watched a shop tech at his previous employer skip this step for years and had not realized it was required. On every install we do, we walk the operator through this sequence three times before we leave. If your lift installer did not do this, ask them to come back and do it. The safety locks are not optional. They are the difference between a controlled surprise and an unrecoverable one.
Wheel bearing service and arm swing clearance
Wheel bearing service on a 2-post autolift garage lift requires you to get the wheel off the vehicle and have room to swing a torque wrench on the spindle nut. That means the arms of the lift have to catch the frame at a point that leaves the wheel accessible from all sides, and the arms themselves cannot block your working position. Asymmetric arms with the standard reach usually work fine for compact and mid-size passenger cars. For heavier trucks with wider wheels and longer wheelbases, you sometimes need extended-reach front arms or the ability to swing the rear arms out farther. We spec’d asymmetric standard-reach arms for our Urbandale client’s tire and alignment shop because his vehicle mix was almost entirely passenger cars and light SUVs. If half his work were heavier trucks, we would have gone with extended-reach.
Concrete inspection: what a certified slab looks like
A certified autolift garage slab is 6 inches thick, has a minimum specified compressive strength, and is free of visible cracks in the footprint of the lift. That last point catches buyers. A slab can be the right thickness and the right strength and still not be fit for a lift if it has a settlement crack running through the anchor pattern. Our client’s slab was newly poured, so we had the pour certification on paper from his concrete contractor and we visually confirmed no cracks. If your shop is older, we do a physical inspection before we quote install. We look for surface cracks, spalling, and any signs of moisture wicking up through the slab. A wet slab under a lift is a rust problem waiting to happen at the anchor bolts. Fix it before you install, or accept that you will be replacing anchors sooner than you would otherwise.
Wheel chocks and the small stuff that gets skipped
Every autolift garage install we complete includes a walkthrough of the small safety items that get skipped by shops that self-install or buy from suppliers that do not do install training. Chock the wheels of any vehicle you are about to lift before you engage the arms. Verify the arm restraint pins are in place before you raise. Do not exit a raised vehicle onto the lift structure; use a step or come down first. Wear safety glasses when you are under a vehicle at any height. These are not novel. They are what every shop safety poster says. But we have walked into shops where the safety pins were removed because they were noisy and where the wheel chocks were used as door stops. Every one of these items is on our post-install checklist and we sign off on each with the buyer.
What we hand off at the end of a safety walk
At the end of a full autolift garage safety walkthrough we hand the buyer a printed one-page summary of what we checked, what we recommended, and what remains to be done. For the Urbandale tire shop that summary listed the ceiling clearance we verified, the door swing envelope we mapped, the slab certification we accepted, and the safety training we completed with him and his lead tech. We also listed the next scheduled service date, which for a commercial 2-post is at 12 months for cable and anchor inspection, and at 24 months for a full hydraulic check.
