What Northwest Iowa’s Older Panels Actually Have

A lot of pole-barn shops and older farmhouses across northwest Iowa still run 100-amp service, sometimes with a 60-amp sub-panel out to a detached garage. Before we ever talk about arm length or column height, we ask what is feeding the building. A single 240V, 30-amp two-pole breaker is the usual minimum for a 220V single-phase two-post lift, and that assumes nothing else pulls hard on that same circuit at the same time. If a MIG welder or a 60-gallon compressor lives on that panel, planning matters. We had this customer meter his idle draw on a Saturday morning before we shipped anything so we could size his run once instead of twice.

110V vs 220V Is Not a Coin Flip

Nearly every automotive lift for home garage service work runs on 220V single-phase. A handful of low-capacity storage lifts will accept 110V, but a two-post capable of hoisting a 6,000-lb pickup to knee-height for brake work needs the 240V circuit. Amp draw drops in half, motor life goes up, and cycle times shorten. Our northwest Iowa mobile mechanic already had a 30-amp dryer circuit into his garage from a previous project; we borrowed the neutral, dropped it to a dedicated two-pole, and finished within code. If you are pulling fresh wire, do not cheap out on gauge over a long run — voltage drop over 50 feet of undersized copper eats motor life fast.

Single-Phase vs Three-Phase in a Home Setting

Three-phase power is a commercial-shop reality; residential and rural feeds across northwest Iowa are essentially never three-phase. Every automotive lift for home garage installation we have done in Sioux, O’Brien, or Plymouth counties has been on 220V single-phase. If you see a lift spec sheet quoting three-phase pricing, that is the same lift with a different motor — we swap it before it ships. Do not buy a three-phase-only lift for a house or residential outbuilding unless you are prepared to install a rotary phase converter, which typically costs a low four-figure sum, occupies floor space, and adds one more failure point to a Saturday morning brake job.

Sizing an Automotive Lift for Home Garage Circuit

Rule of thumb for a 220V single-phase two-post automotive lift for home garage service: 30-amp two-pole breaker, 10-gauge copper on runs under 50 feet, 8-gauge on longer runs. The lift ships with a short pigtail — our northwest Iowa buyer got a 6-foot cord out of the box and had his electrician add a NEMA 6-30 receptacle within reach of the power unit. Never coil the unused cord tight against the column; the heat has nowhere to go and the insulation cooks. Basic stuff, but it is the single most common code miss we see on home-shop installs, and it will fail an inspector’s walk-through in about ten seconds.

Grounding and GFCI in a Pole Barn

Concrete-floor pole barns are unforgiving on ground faults. The bond from your sub-panel back to the main service ground has to be intact. GFCI is not required by NEC on a hardwired 240V two-pole in most jurisdictions, but a lot of Iowa inspectors will still flag a wet-location outlet that lacks it. This customer’s shop had a dirt strip along one wall from an old lean-to, so we recommended a properly bonded ground rod at the sub-panel and a GFCI breaker for peace of mind. Your local inspector’s word beats ours every time; ask before you buy the lift, not after it is bolted to the slab.

Motor Amperage and What Fits

A 220V, 2-horsepower single-phase motor pulls roughly 12-14 running amps and up to 30-plus on startup surge. That is why the breaker has to be 30-amp, not 20. Any automotive lift for home garage sized 9,000 lb or heavier typically runs a 2.5 to 3 HP motor and creeps closer to the top of that 30-amp two-pole. If you run a compressor and the lift on the same circuit, you will trip on the compressor’s kick-in every time. We wired a dedicated circuit for our northwest Iowa mobile mechanic and he has not tripped once in two seasons of Saturday brake work. What the Finished Install Looked Like

Final configuration for that mobile mechanic: 9,000-lb symmetric two-post on a 4-inch reinforced slab, 220V single-phase, 30-amp dedicated two-pole, 10-gauge copper on a 22-foot run, NEMA 6-30 at eye level on the near column. Ceiling clearance was 11 feet 3 inches, which cleared the overhead cable crossbar with a couple of inches to spare. Our crew was on site for one day. He has run roughly 40 brake jobs on it since, plus a rear differential seal on his own pickup.
