An overlanding builder outside Red Oak called us last winter with a fresh 30×40 pole building going up and one question: could an automotive storage lift hold his weekend expedition rig on top while he restored a project truck underneath? Yes, and we have laid out enough garages like his across southwest Iowa to know what sequencing decisions kill a build versus what makes a shop work for the next twenty years. This is a case study from that install, walked from bare concrete through final anchor torque, so you can see the order the decisions actually have to happen in.

Why an automotive storage lift changes the pole-barn math

Before he called us, our overlander had a floor plan drawn for a two-bay garage. After we talked through storage, he redrew it as a single deep bay with an automotive storage lift parked on the wall he would normally have used for a bench. That single change gave him vertical storage for the built-out expedition rig and freed the whole floor underneath for a metal fab table, MIG cart, and project truck. In a 30×40 shop, floor real estate is the constraint that hurts most. Going vertical with a 4-post trades a 10×20 footprint for two vehicle stalls, one on the ground and one overhead. The difference between not being able to turn around and having room to weld a bumper on a rotisserie comes down to that one call, made before the concrete truck rolled in.

Sequencing the concrete and the automotive storage lift

We do not pour concrete without knowing where the lift columns are going. Every automotive storage lift we sell has a published anchor pattern, and the column feet want a minimum slab thickness with the right PSI concrete under them. For the Red Oak build we specified a 6-inch pour at 4000 PSI in the lift zone, tapering to 4 inches for the rest of the shop. That is not overkill; it is what the manual asks for on a 9,000 lb four-post. If you pour a thin slab and try to retrofit later, you are core-drilling and epoxy-anchoring into questionable substrate. The right order is locate the lift on paper, mark it before the pour, thicken the slab in that zone, then let it cure a full 28 days before you drop anchors. Ceiling height and door swing in a 12-foot sidewall shop

Twelve-foot sidewalls sound tall until you actually park a full-size rig up top on an automotive storage lift. The math we walked our southwest Iowa client through: measure from the finished floor to the lowest ceiling obstruction, meaning trusses, purlins, lights, or garage door tracks, not to the peak of the roof. On his build, sidewalls were 12 ft but the door opener rails hung down at 10 ft 6 in. Once you subtract lift platform thickness, vehicle height on top, and safe stopping clearance, a full-size overland rig with a rooftop tent will not fit under a 10 ft 6 in obstruction. He moved the door opener to a jackshaft side-mount, recovered 18 inches, and the rig cleared with room to spare. Check overhead door tracks, lighting, and HVAC lines before you commit to a lift model. That is a two-hour drawing exercise that saves a five-figure mistake.

Choosing the right capacity for a restoration workflow

His overhead rig weighed in around 6,400 lb loaded on the automotive storage lift, and the project truck was a mid-1970s half-ton at maybe 4,200 lb dry. We pushed him to a 9,000 lb four-post rather than a 7,000 lb, and the reason is simple: capacity ratings are for a static, evenly-loaded vehicle sitting on the runways. When you are doing restoration work, pulling a bed, hanging a fender, climbing around on the deck with tools, you want headroom on the rating. A 9,000 lb storage lift gives him room for the current builds and any future project up to a three-quarter-ton. The cost delta between the 7K and 9K four-post in his configuration was a few hundred dollars. That is the cheapest capacity upgrade you will ever buy, and it protects the investment if the next project is a diesel dually.

Anchoring, power, and lighting around the lift

Once the slab cured, we set the columns, laid out the anchor pattern with the template, and drilled with a rotary hammer at the exact depth the manual calls out. Deeper is not better, it is worse. We used wedge anchors sized to the manual, torqued to spec in a star pattern. Power on a four-post automotive storage lift is straightforward: a 110V circuit will run it, but we always recommend a dedicated 20-amp line with GFI protection at the panel, not a shared circuit with the compressor. Lighting is the piece most builders forget. Two LED shop lights placed high and outboard of the runways will shadow-fall onto the underside of the top vehicle. What you want is lower, closer, and angled: an LED task strip mounted on the ceiling directly over the runways lights the underside of the top rig without dazzling you.

Metal work, welding, and access to the underside

The whole point of this build was fabrication access under the top vehicle. That means the drip pans on the runways matter more than they usually do. Sparks from a MIG or plasma landing on an oil-soaked drip pan is a real fire hazard, so we specified stainless drip trays and had him pull the vehicle onto a fresh set before any welding session. Ground clamps go to the vehicle chassis, never to the lift structure. You do not want stray current chasing through the hydraulic system or the safety ladders. For metal fab on the ground level under the storage rig, a low welding table on casters lets you roll under the runways and work on doors, panels, and bumpers without banging into the columns. Cross-drafts from the overhead door will drag welding fumes out of the shop if you set your fans right.

What the total build actually cost

Rolled up: the 9,000 lb four-post automotive storage lift landed in the low-to-mid four figures, install ran about a day for our two-person crew, and the concrete upgrade to a thickened lift zone added a few hundred dollars to his pour. Anchors, drip trays, and a caster kit added roughly the cost of a decent tool box. The overhead door jackshaft conversion, the single change that made the whole build work with 12-foot sidewalls, was the biggest surprise line item on his build sheet, but it was the one that unlocked the lift. Net for a fully-installed, fabrication-ready storage bay: he spent well under the price of finishing out a second garage stall and gained a stall’s worth of vertical parking on top of it.
