A service manager at a Council Bluffs franchise dealership called us in February with a straightforward question: symmetric or asymmetric? His techs were splitting time on the same three automotive two post lifts, doing everything from quick-lube oil changes to warranty transmissions, and he wanted the next four bays specced right. That call turned into a 40-minute technical conversation about arm geometry, column rotation, and load-balance math. Here is what we told him, with actual dimensions from the install that followed. What a dealership service manager needs from automotive two post lifts

A franchise dealer runs the widest possible vehicle mix under one roof. Compact hybrids, midsize crossovers, half-ton pickups, and occasional heavy-duty gas trucks brought in for warranty, plus service loaners and demos. That is 3,000 to 8,500 pound curb weights on the same lifts all day, every day. The service manager we were talking to also had two customer-pay techs on flat-rate and two warranty techs on hourly, and the flat-rate guys wanted the fastest cycle time from vehicle in the bay to arms locked. Automotive two post lifts have to serve both crowds. They have to swing arms fast and land pads accurately for a rushed lube job, and they have to be positioned rigidly and precisely enough for a transmission drop with a jack. Symmetric and asymmetric arms behave differently in each situation. We started by asking what percentage of their vehicle traffic was under 4,500 pounds. He said 70 percent. That single number drives the arm decision most of the time.

Symmetric arms: the geometry and where they belong

On a symmetric lift, the columns face each other directly and both arms are the same length front and back. The vehicle sits with roughly half its wheelbase forward of the columns and half behind. The load is centered between the columns. Symmetric geometry is preferred for heavier vehicles because the load line stays close to column center, which reduces cantilever stress on the arm pins. If your fleet leans toward 3/4-ton and one-ton pickups, symmetric arms are almost always the answer. The downside for a franchise dealership is door swing. On a symmetric lift, the driver’s door lands right at the column, and a customer or tech opening the door hits the post at about 60 degrees. That is fine for a heavy-duty diesel bay where doors barely open anyway. It is annoying for a lube tech doing 22 cars a day on Camrys and RAV4s. Symmetric automotive two post lifts belong in truck bays, alignment prep bays, and any location where 5,000-plus pound vehicles are the majority of what rolls in.

Asymmetric arms: rotated columns and the load balance

On an asymmetric lift, the columns are rotated roughly 30 degrees so the arms are longer at the back and shorter at the front. The vehicle sits with about 70 percent of its wheelbase behind the columns. That puts the driver-side door forward of the column entirely, so it opens 90 degrees with room to spare. Techs love asymmetric lifts for cars because they can walk in and out of the vehicle with the door fully open. The load line, however, sits farther back and slightly outboard, which loads the rear arms more heavily and puts more moment on the arm pins. That is fine at 4,000 to 5,000 pounds. It becomes a problem for pickups pushing 7,000 pounds. This is why you rarely see pure asymmetric lifts specced for heavy-duty truck shops. For a dealership car-heavy bay, asymmetric is the right call. For a heavy-duty pickup bay, asymmetric is a mistake. The 70-30 mix at the Council Bluffs dealership told us their four new bays should be asymmetric, because the cars they see far outweigh the trucks in bay-hours consumed.

Versymmetric: the hybrid design for mixed traffic

Rotary and Challenger both offer versymmetric arms that combine mostly-symmetric arm length with slight column rotation. You get most of the door-swing benefit of a full asymmetric and most of the load-centering benefit of a symmetric. For a general-service bay in a mixed dealership, versymmetric is genuinely the sweet spot. We recommended it for two of the four new bays at this dealership, keeping the other two as full asymmetric for the volume lube work. The service manager was initially skeptical because versymmetric adds cost and one more part number for arm rebuild kits down the road. But over ten years of use, the flexibility pays back in fewer "can we move that truck to the other bay" conversations. Automotive two post lifts are a 15-to-20-year investment. Splitting the difference between symmetric and asymmetric with a versymmetric option is worth the small upfront delta on a dealership install. Real dimensions from a Council Bluffs install

Here are the numbers from that job. Bay footprint per lift: 12 feet wide, 24 feet deep. Ceiling height clear: 12 feet 8 inches. Column height: 11 feet 6 inches for the overhead versions. Between-columns width: 9 feet on the asymmetric setups, 8 feet 6 inches on the versymmetric. Lifting height at fully raised: 74 to 76 inches under-pad. Concrete thickness verified before drilling: 5.5 inches nominal, spot-checked at 5.25 minimum. Anchor pattern: 3/4-inch wedge anchors, four per column, 4.5-inch embed. Power: three-phase 208V at 30 amps, hardwired from the sub-panel with a lockable disconnect within sight of each lift. Full install of all four lifts across two long weekends so the service department stayed open during the week. This is the kind of dimensional work we do on every commercial job. If a shop tells us "we have got the space, do not worry about it," that is the answer that lets you down two years later when a technician cannot open a door. Measure twice, quote once.

Capacity, drive-through width, and lifting height numbers

The four bays landed on 10,000 pound automotive two post lifts. That capacity is more than they will ever load; the biggest trucks they warranty are around 8,500 pounds. But going with 10K instead of 9K bought them a taller column, a slightly longer arm range, and about 4 more inches of lifting height. Drive-through width matters too. A dually pickup with a chase-package box measures 96 inches wide across the mirrors. Between-column clearance on a 10K lift is typically 100 to 105 inches. That is enough, barely. On a lift with the arms parked forward, a tech can drive a dually straight through. On a 9K lift with 96 inches between columns, you cannot. Lifting height at 74 to 76 inches under-pad lets a 6-foot tech stand under the vehicle without a stooped back all day. Small differences in those three numbers — capacity, between-column width, and lifting height — separate a good bay from a great bay. The dealership was happy to pay the small delta for the bigger numbers.

Choosing the right pair of automotive two post lifts for a dealership

If you are speccing lifts for a franchise dealership, our default recommendation is two full-asymmetric 10,000 lb lifts for the lube-and-tire bays, two versymmetric 10K lifts for general service, and one symmetric 12K or 15K lift for the truck or diesel bay. If you only have four bays to work with, drop the symmetric truck bay and add another versymmetric. You can do warranty pickup work on versymmetric arms without penalty as long as you center the load carefully. Automotive two post lifts installed correctly last 15 to 20 years in daily commercial service before requiring a major rebuild — cylinders reseal, cables get replaced every five to seven years, arm restraints inspected annually. It is a capital purchase you make once and live with. Get the arm configuration right for the vehicle mix you actually run, not the mix you wish you ran.
