Capacity for race applications
A race car is light. Most Late Models come in at 2,300 to 2,700 pounds, and a modified isn’t much more. That means a 9,000 or 10,000 lb capacity lift is more than adequate for the vehicle itself. But race shops often also service the crew chief’s daily driver, the parts hauler, and sometimes a heavier tow rig that comes in for tire rotation. If your shop is a race-only bay, the 9,000 lb tier is fine. If it’s a dual-use bay, step up to 10,000 or 12,000. On two-post lifts, the capacity number is the sum across both columns. A 10K lift takes 5K per column. Rating headroom matters because uneven loading during an axle or transmission drop can push one column closer to its individual limit than the total number suggests. Buy more capacity than you think you’ll need if there’s any chance a heavier vehicle rolls in. It’s the cheapest form of insurance you can add at the spec-sheet stage, and it doesn’t affect your ceiling or arm-reach constraints.
Symmetric vs asymmetric for alignment
For alignment work, symmetric geometry gives you equal working room on both sides of the vehicle. Critical when you’re checking toe on the front and rear simultaneously, or moving between wheel wells with the alignment heads attached. Asymmetric lifts (columns rotated 30 degrees, vehicle positioned toward the front) give you better door-opening clearance for interior work but slightly compromise rear-of-vehicle access. Race shops we work with usually prefer symmetric for alignment-heavy work. General shops usually prefer asymmetric. The trade-off is real but not huge.
