When an RV and trailer service shop in the Des Moines metro area called us about automotive two post lifts for suspension and shock work, we knew the electrical was going to be the bottleneck. Big shops with older buildings often have single-phase 220 service and a panel that’s already close to capacity. A high-lift-cycle-count RV bay needs steady power, and getting there took a couple of weeks and a licensed electrician on-site. Why automotive two post lifts beat four-post for RV suspension work

For suspension and shock replacement on a class B or class C RV chassis, or on a trailer with independent torsion axles, you need the wheels hanging. Four-post lifts hold the vehicle by the tires, which loads the suspension in ride height. Exactly what you don’t want when you’re pulling springs, shocks, or torsion arms. Automotive two post lifts lift the frame and let the axles hang free, giving you full unloaded access to every suspension component. That’s the answer for any shop where suspension is a significant slice of the work mix. For an RV bay the additional consideration is length. Many class B RVs are 20 to 22 feet long, which fits between the columns of a standard two-post lift. But a class C at 26 feet or longer may extend beyond the arms. Single-phase vs three-phase

Two-post lifts come in single-phase 208-230V and three-phase 208-230V or 460V configurations. Most home garages and small commercial bays use single-phase. That’s what the standard utility connection provides. Larger commercial buildings with heavier machinery may have three-phase service, which allows a more efficient lift motor with lower amp draw and longer motor life. For the RV shop, the building was single-phase 220 with a 200-amp main panel. That’s adequate for one lift plus normal shop loads, but adding a lift means adding a dedicated 30-amp circuit and confirming the panel has room. The alternative (upgrading to three-phase service) was cost-prohibitive at four figures from the utility. Sticking with single-phase and picking a lift rated for it was the honest answer. Every major brand offers single-phase versions of their commercial lifts. The difference in longevity is small enough to ignore for a shop running fewer than 30 lift cycles per day. Which describes most RV service bays we work with.

Getting the electrician on-site first

Before we scheduled the install, we asked the shop owner to get his electrician in for a panel walk and load calculation. This step gets skipped too often, and it’s the number-one cause of install delays we see. The electrician verified the panel had capacity for a dedicated 30-amp 220 circuit, spec’d 10-gauge THHN wire from the panel to the lift column, and confirmed a nearby subpanel wouldn’t be a better tie-in point. He also ran the circuit before install day so we didn’t have a lift sitting in the middle of the shop waiting on wiring. Total electrical cost landed in a modest three-figure range for materials and labor on a 40-foot run. If the panel had needed upgrading, it would have been closer to a mid-four-figure number. Install day and commissioning

Install day for the RV shop took our crew about six hours from truck arrival to first up-cycle. The columns were positioned, plumbed vertically, anchored to the concrete slab, and the hydraulic power unit was mounted and connected. Electrical hookup was quick since the electrician had pre-run the circuit. Then we bled the hydraulic system, cycled the lift up and down five times empty to check equalization, cycled it three more times with a test vehicle on the arms, and walked the owner through the safety-lock engagement, emergency lowering procedure, and daily inspection checklist. Automotive two post lifts should come with an install checklist the manufacturer publishes. We work through that document line by line, sign it, and leave a copy with the owner for their records. That paperwork matters for the ALI annual inspection five years down the road, and for warranty coverage in year six or seven when a hydraulic component fails. It’s the boring paperwork that turns out to matter most.

Six months in: the workflow

Six months in, the RV shop was running four to six suspension or shock jobs a week on the new lift, plus routine service on the rest of their work mix. The workflow they settled into: pull the RV into the bay, position on lift pads under the frame, raise to shoulder height, engage the safety lock, drop the axles for shock replacement or spring inspection, service, lower to reset lock, verify torque, lower to floor. Average job time on a full shock swap: about 90 minutes on a class B, 2 hours on a class C. That’s a real productivity gain over the pre-lift setup where they’d been working with axle jacks and stands. The owner told us he thought the lift had already paid back a third of its cost through faster job turnover. That’s a story we hear often on suspension-heavy shops that transition from stands to two-post lifts. Once you feel the difference on a full-length axle teardown, you can’t go back to jack stands.

Year-end review

At the one-year mark, the owner walked us through what he’d learned. Wins: faster jobs, better inspection quality (you see everything with the wheels hanging), and no back injuries from wrestling shocks off stands. Frustrations: he wished he’d bought the wider column-spacing option. A 26-foot class C is a tight fit at standard spacing, and he sometimes turns away those jobs rather than force the vehicle onto the lift. Cost recovery: the lift’s straight math payback was under 14 months at his job rate. Warranty claims: zero. Downtime: zero. That’s a good first-year story for a shop transitioning to two-post work. His advice to other RV shops considering the same move: spec the arms and column spacing for your biggest vehicle, not your average. The upcharge is small. The missed jobs are big. If we’d done a longer bay walk-through we’d have flagged it, but he’d made the arm-package call himself and only realized the trade-off later.
