First-Time Home Garage Car Lift Buyer’s Guide (Southern Minnesota Edition)

If this is your first car lift and you are putting it in a home garage or pole building in southern Minnesota, the process is simpler than the internet makes it look. We cover what to buy, how to pay for it, and what to expect on install day.

Storage first or service first: which one are you

The very first question we ask a first-time buyer is what you actually want the car lift to do. If the answer is “park one car above another to free up floor space in a thirty-by-forty pole barn,” you want a four-post. Four-post lifts sit on their own wheels or on caster kits, do not require anchoring to concrete, hold a car indefinitely for storage, and roll out of the way when you want the floor back. If the answer is “work on cars,” you want a two-post. Two-post lifts hold the car by its frame with all four wheels dangling free, which is the geometry every service job wants. If the honest answer is both, then most first-time home garage buyers land on a four-post with a rolling-jack kit, which stores like a four-post and services like a two-post most of the time.

Capacity: 7,000 lb, 8,000 lb, or 9,000 lb for a home garage

For a home garage doing car-over-car storage, 7,000 lb is enough for two passenger vehicles or a passenger vehicle above a sports car. If either car is a full-size pickup or SUV, jump to 8,000 or 9,000 lb. Atlas offers strong entry-level four-post options in the 7K to 8K range at a lower price. Do not overbuild much past 9K for a home garage unless you know you need it. Extra capacity costs money and adds column height without giving you meaningful additional utility if the vehicles are ordinary passenger cars and light trucks.

Ceiling height reality check

The single biggest constraint on a car lift in a home garage is ceiling height. The number you want is the finished floor to the lowest ceiling obstruction, including light fixtures, garage door tracks, and truss chords. For a full-height four-post that stores a 55-inch sedan under a 72-inch SUV, you need roughly 11 feet six inches to 12 feet of clear ceiling. A 30-by-40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls usually works. A residential attached garage with an 8-foot ceiling does not, and there is no low-ceiling variant that gets you around real physics. If you are in that situation, we would talk about a mid-rise scissor lift for service or a portable jack system instead.

State inspection considerations for private garages

Minnesota does not have an annual state safety inspection for privately owned passenger vehicles, so you do not need to worry about running an inspection lane out of a home shop. What you do want to think about is the ALI Gold Label certification on the lift, because that certification is the paperwork that gets pulled if something ever goes wrong and an insurer or a home policy underwriter asks. We only sell ALI-certified equipment for home garages. If a lift shows up on a marketplace listing for half the price and there is no ALI label on the column, walk away. The certification cost is baked into the retail price for a reason, and the cost of not having one shows up at exactly the worst moment.

Financing: twelve months no interest for home purchases too

First-time buyers are often surprised that our financing offer applies to residential purchases and not just commercial shops. For an 8K or 9K four-post installed in southern Minnesota, the monthly figure typically lands where most owners cover it with a normal budget line item. What install day actually looks like

For a four-post home-garage install, the crew arrives with the lift crated on a truck, uncrates in your driveway, wheels the pieces into the bay, and assembles it on the floor. There is no concrete anchoring on a standard four-post, which means no drilling and no dust. The whole job usually runs three to five hours depending on whether you are adding rolling jacks or drip trays. We cycle the car lift under load with one of your own vehicles before we leave, run through the mechanical lock cycle with you, and hand off the ALI paperwork.
