If you run the service department at a Quad Cities dealership and you are speccing a car lift specifically for the alignment bay, this is a technical deep-dive written for you. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, Iowa, and we sell into dealer service departments in Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, and East Moline. This article gets into real dimensions, alignment turn-plate and slip-plate specs, arm restraint and reach numbers, and, at the end, the trade-in and resale market for used dealership car lift equipment when you cycle out an older unit for something newer.

Alignment lift geometry is not the same as service lift geometry
Alignment work is unforgiving of car lift geometry that is close-but-not-quite. To do proper toe, camber, and caster you need the vehicle held level to within a very small tolerance across all four wheels, plus front turn plates and rear slip plates that let the wheels rotate and slide freely. That rules out a straight two-post for real alignment work in a dealership context. What you want instead is either a four-post alignment lift with dedicated turn-plate and slip-plate pockets in the runways, or a scissor alignment lift that sits flush with the floor. Both are engineered specifically to hold the vehicle geometrically true. A dealer that tries to do volume alignment work on a general-purpose two-post lift will fight the geometry and will produce inconsistent alignment specs across the same day.
Four-post alignment models: Rotary AR series and Challenger 4015
Two workhorse four-post alignment models we install into dealership service bays are the Rotary AR series (typically 14,000 lb class with true alignment runways) and the Challenger 4015 series. Both have listed runway lengths in the 180 to 200 inch range, wheelbase capacity that comfortably covers passenger cars through full-size SUVs, and integrated pockets for front turn plates around the sixteen-inch mark and rear slip plates roughly forty to sixty inches back. Lifting height on both lines lands around 72 to 74 inches, which is comfortable working height for a dealer alignment tech standing at the pit. Both are ALI Gold Label certified. Where they differ is minor: hydraulic power unit placement, cable routing, and small differences in the way the rear slip plate covers latch. Both are supportable long term from our Ames parts inventory.
Scissor alignment: flush-floor and low-profile options
The alternative to a four-post alignment lift is a scissor alignment car lift that sits flush with the floor in a pit. Rotary and Forward both offer them. Advantage: the bay looks clean, the tech drives the car on and off without ramps, and the geometry is dead flat. Disadvantage: the pit is a permanent building modification and moving the lift later means filling concrete. For a dealership that is building or remodeling a service department and knows the alignment bay is staying in that location for the twenty-year life of the equipment, scissor is often the right pick. For an existing bay where you would rather not open the slab, four-post alignment is the practical choice and it produces the same alignment accuracy.
Turn-plate and slip-plate specs that actually matter
Turn plates for a dealership alignment bay should be a matched set from the alignment machine’s OEM, sized to the pocket cutout in the runway. Typical passenger-car turn plates are around 12 to 14 inches square with a 360-degree rotation range and a rated capacity of 3,500 to 5,000 lb per plate. Slip plates are usually 8 by 20 or 10 by 24 inches, capable of both fore-aft and lateral sliding to release residual stress in the suspension. When you order a car lift from us with alignment intent, we spec the pocket size to match your existing turn plates and slip plates, or we quote both together as a package. Do not assume any alignment lift accepts any turn plate. The cutout dimensions vary between manufacturers and getting this right on order day saves a very frustrating install day.
Trade-in and resale on used dealership lifts
When you replace an aging car lift, the used market is real. A well-maintained used ALI-certified four-post alignment lift in the 10,000 lb to 14,000 lb range with current inspection paperwork typically trades in the mid to upper four-figure range depending on age, brand, and cosmetics. Rotary and Challenger hold their resale value better than most other brands. We take trade-ins on new-lift orders and can also broker used equipment to independent shops that are stepping up from a two-post to a four-post alignment configuration. Install considerations for a Quad Cities dealership bay
A dealership alignment bay install is more involved than a general service bay install because the runway pockets, the alignment machine tower mounts, and the electrical and air routing all have to line up on the floor plan before concrete is poured or drilled. We come on site during the design phase, mark the pocket locations, confirm slab thickness and rebar mapping, and coordinate with the alignment machine vendor so the tower cameras or targets see the wheels the way the software expects. Turnkey install typically runs one to two days on the floor once the concrete work is ready. We hand it off with the ALI ten-year inspection sticker applied and the paperwork filed so the dealer group’s compliance team has what it needs at the next internal audit.
Placing the order and scheduling the install
Call 800-674-9302 and ask for the alignment lift quote. Tell us the alignment machine you use, the runway length you want, the ceiling height in the bay, the slab thickness, and whether you are trading in an older unit. We will quote a specific car lift model, a trade-in value if applicable, install labor, and financing on the balance. Dealer group orders often flow through corporate procurement and we can invoice through your existing supplier portal. Delivery into the Quad Cities is a routine run for our freight, and install slots are usually available within a few weeks. If you want to see a comparable install in another dealer’s bay in the area, tell us and we will arrange a walkthrough.
