A car restoration shop owner near the Iowa Great Lakes region wanted a garage two post lift that could double as a winter storage setup for restoration projects – park a car up on the lift for four months while the shop worked on other projects underneath. That’s a real workflow, but it changes how you lay out the bay. This decision tree walks through what changes when a lift is doing double duty as seasonal storage plus active service, and how we specced the Great Lakes shop’s three-bay layout to make it work all year.

Storage-plus-service: a workflow with different constraints

A garage two post lift that stores a vehicle for weeks or months has a different duty cycle than one that lifts and lowers ten times a day. Storage lifts sit under load with cables tensioned and latches engaged for extended periods, which is fine – the lift is designed for it – but it means the bay around the lift needs to remain functional for other work. If your restoration shop is one bay wide and the lift eats the whole bay, you can’t work around a stored vehicle. If the bay is two-wide or has an adjoining bay with a walkway, you can. The Iowa Great Lakes shop had a three-bay layout: one for active tear-down, one for the paint booth entry, and one for lift-based storage plus service. Getting that mix right was the whole exercise. Bay footprint: minimum vs comfortable

A garage two post lift needs a bay with a minimum footprint of 12 feet wide by 24 feet deep to install and operate safely on a mid-sized vehicle. That’s the absolute minimum. Comfortable is 14 feet wide by 26 feet deep. For a restoration bay where the vehicle stays parked and the shop works around it, add another 3 feet of side clearance so that panel work, welding rigs, and a scaffold cart all fit. The Great Lakes shop’s bay was 16 feet wide by 30 feet deep – generous. It’s what allowed them to store a project on the lift while still rolling a workbench under the vehicle for interior work. If you’re squeezing a two-post into a tight bay, be honest about what you’ll actually do in there. A lift crammed into 12 feet by 24 does the lift-and-lower part fine but doesn’t leave room for the workflow you probably imagined when you drew it on graph paper.

Column placement and drive-through clearance

Column-to-column spacing on a standard garage two post lift runs 9’2″ to 10’6″ depending on the model. That’s inside the columns; outside dimensions add another foot per column. Drive-through clearance – the door-to-column distance you need for a full-width vehicle to enter and center – is the driver’s dimension. For a typical mid-sized sedan, 22 feet of aisle from the door to the closest column back-off is enough. For a truck with an extended cab and a plow, add another 3 feet. In a restoration shop where the stored vehicle might be a Cadillac Fleetwood or an F-350, you want the longer clearance. The Great Lakes shop centered the lift 26 feet from the door and gave themselves a full drive-through, so a vehicle enters the bay, drives past the lift, and only backs into position – never a tight three-point turn in a narrow space.

Storage duration: what happens to a lift with a car sitting for months

A garage two post lift holding a vehicle for months tests the latch system, not the hydraulics. Latches are what carry the load once the hydraulics have raised the lift; the pressure in the cylinders is released to the pressure-hold valve and then to the latches. That’s how the lift is designed – it’s a mechanical hold, not a hydraulic hold. Over months, the latches don’t move. The seals in the cylinder relax. When you eventually lower the vehicle, the hydraulics may need to be re-primed by cycling the lift empty a couple of times. That’s normal. What isn’t normal is a lift that’s been fully raised for months with the pressure system still under load – that will kill seals. Always release the pressure to the latches for storage. Our install folder for the Great Lakes shop specifically documents this because their storage cycle is seasonal and predictable.

Working under a stored vehicle: safety and access

Working under a stored vehicle on a garage two post lift is a specific safety exercise. The vehicle is stable on the latches, but a shop that’s still active around it needs to respect the load overhead. No welding directly on the vehicle above (heat and hydraulic fluid); no bumping the columns with a rolling cart hard enough to shake the load; and no lowering the lift while a person is working underneath. That last one sounds obvious but the Iowa Great Lakes shop instituted a physical lock-out on the down-lever handle during storage months – a padlock through the handle so nobody accidentally lowers the lift while someone’s under it. That’s the level of shop discipline that turns a storage lift into a safe workflow. Underbody lighting matters more when the vehicle sits stationary because you’re not working overhead lights – a rolling LED work light with a magnetic base is the right accessory.

The Iowa Great Lakes install: what we specced

For the Great Lakes shop we installed a 10,000-pound Rotary SPO10 in the storage-and-service bay. Baseplate configuration – their ceiling was 11’8″, tight for overhead. Extended-length arms (14 feet instead of 12) so the arm reach covers longer restoration project vehicles like a full-size classic sedan. Symmetric layout because they lift both sports cars and trucks. Anchors driven into a 6-inch reinforced slab poured new when the shop was built five years ago – no coring needed, they had the paperwork. Total install one day. They store one restoration project on the lift each winter (roughly December through March) and use the lift actively the rest of the year. Our bay-layout decision tree

Question one: is the lift dedicated to storage-plus-service, or is it primarily service with occasional storage? If dedicated: plan for a full-time parked vehicle and lay out around it. If primarily service: standard bay footprint is fine. Question two: what’s the longest vehicle you might store? Add 4 feet to that number for column-to-door clearance minimum. Question three: how many active workflows happen alongside a stored vehicle? If more than two techs work around it simultaneously, upsize the bay to 16 feet wide. Question four: what’s your ceiling? Under 12 feet, baseplate configuration. Question five: what’s your climate control? Iowa Great Lakes region winters mean the lift’s hydraulic fluid gets cold and viscous – specify a lift with a heated shop or a cold-weather fluid package. Answer those five questions and you land on the right bay layout for a garage two post lift that has to do double duty.
