How to Tell if the Rotary Lift Motor Is Actually the Problem

Half the calls we get about a rotary lift motor turn out to be something else. A lift that will not rise can be low hydraulic fluid, a stuck check valve, a failed relay, a bad up-button contact, or a leak past the cylinder seal. Before you spend a few hundred dollars on a replacement motor, we walk shops through a five-minute check: is the fluid at level, does the motor hum or is it silent, does the breaker trip when you press up, does the pendant have voltage at the up-button when you press it?

If the motor hums but the lift does not move, the capacitor or the start winding is usually the fault. If the motor is silent, the pendant switch or the contactor is usually the fault. If the breaker trips instantly on start, the motor windings may be shorted and the motor is done. We can walk you through these tests over the phone before anyone spends money. Identifying the Right Rotary Lift Motor for Your Unit

Every Rotary lift has a serial-number plate, usually on the power-unit tank or on the column near the pendant. That plate is what we need to identify the exact motor — Rotary has run several motor suppliers over the years, and the correct replacement depends on the year, the model, and the power-unit generation. A 2015 SPOA10 does not take the same motor as a 1995 SPOA10, even though the lift itself looks nearly identical from a walk-around.

Send us the serial-plate photo and the motor nameplate photo if the motor is still readable. From those two pictures we can pull the correct replacement out of stock or from Rotary’s warehouse. If the plates are missing or corroded past reading, we can usually identify from a photo of the whole power unit — the tank shape, the manifold configuration, and the pendant style are distinctive enough for us to spec by sight in most cases. Common Failure Modes We See in Iowa Shops

The most common failure we see is a start-capacitor fault after five to ten years of daily use. Iowa’s temperature swings from January to July put stress on the electrolytic capacitor inside the start box, and eventually it dries out and stops delivering the phase shift the motor needs to spin up. Symptom: motor hums, lift does not rise, breaker does not trip. Fix: replace the capacitor first — that is a ten-dollar part — before you replace the whole motor and spend twenty times as much.

The second most common failure is a moisture-shorted winding in shops that share space with wash bays or that lose their roof for a weekend during a storm. Once water gets into the windings, the motor is done — no dry-out recovery works reliably. A general-service shop in central Iowa we support lost a motor exactly this way last winter after a roof panel came loose, and we had a replacement rotary lift motor on their bench inside forty-eight hours so they could get the bay running again.

Voltage, Phase, and HP Ratings That Matter

Rotary lift power-unit motors are usually rated 208-230V single-phase, 208-230V three-phase, or 460V three-phase, at 2 to 3 HP depending on the lift capacity. You cannot swap a single-phase motor into a three-phase power unit or vice versa — the pump coupling and the wiring are different. Get this wrong and the lift either will not run or it burns up the replacement inside a shift, which turns a bad day into a much worse one for everyone involved.

We verify voltage and phase with every quote. If your shop has three-phase service, we spec the three-phase motor. If you are on single-phase (common in older Iowa shops and home-garage installs), we spec single-phase. HP rating is set by the power unit and the lift capacity — a 9,000 lb two-post takes a different motor than a 12,000 lb two-post takes. We match to the tag data, not to what looks close in the catalog, and we double-check before shipping.

Freight matters on motors because they are heavy. We ship LTL when it makes sense and small-parcel when the motor fits under the small-parcel threshold — you do not pay for full freight on a part that ships small-parcel. Installing a Rotary Lift Motor Yourself vs Calling Us

A motor swap on a Rotary two-post is a moderately technical job. You have to drain enough fluid to safely open the power unit, disconnect the wiring (correctly labeling phases as you go), unbolt the motor from the pump, pull it off cleanly, install the new one, prime the pump, and bleed the system through the lift stroke. A confident shop foreman can do it in about ninety minutes with the right tools. A shop without lift experience should call us and let our tech run it.

We service the lift as a paid install call anywhere in Iowa. Des Moines and Ames are same-week scheduling, Sioux City and Council Bluffs are usually next-week. We bring the motor, the fluid, the seal kit if the pump needs it, and the tools. The shop pays for parts plus labor and gets a clean job with warranty coverage. What to Do Before the Replacement Arrives

Before the new rotary lift motor lands at your bay, do three things. First, lower the lift completely — never leave a raised load on a lift with a dead power unit, even with the mechanical locks engaged and rated. Second, tag out the breaker so nobody trips it during the swap and energizes an open terminal box. Third, note the wiring configuration in the existing motor — a phone photo of the terminal box saves you fifteen minutes when the new motor lands and prevents a phase mistake.
